I'd dread to think what Qualcomm equivalents have been baked into the Snapdragon line of chips! And whether they'd even advertise their enhancement software like MediaTek does.
This practically means us sensitive users are contending with a whole host of issues, coming at us from all different angles.
- Pulse Width Modulation
- Temporal Dithering
- Variable Refresh Rates
- Response times
- Software based enhancements
- Hardware & chip level enhancements
- User interfaces (& Android) based enhancements
This will narrow down our future choices even further - and I can see screen/display discomfort complaints increasing.
Having a standard LCD (over amoled), is no longer a safer option.
The question is - Where do we go from here?
Fixed 60hz displays are becoming a thing of the past. I don't see any manufacturer ever releasing one again, in the future. Unless in the purely entry level budget segment.
We're not just contesting smartphone manufacturers anymore, but along with them, its also SOC developers & Google/Android/programmers.
We need to somehow try and raise more awareness about these issues, as this is heading down a restricted slippery slope.
I'm going to experiment over the next few days, by activating power saving features & keeping refresh rates at 60hz. I might use the setedit app to try & force the refresh rate.
Power saving should (theoretically) help to switch off any superficial screen enhancements (and unnecessary animations) on my basic budget mid rangers,, although its unlikely to have any effect on any of the deeper embedded software/hardware level enhancements.
It'd be Interesting to see if it'll make any difference to comfort.

@qb74 On my realme devices, the lockscreen always jumps to 120hz, even though 60hz is set via the display options. Once unlocked, the display reverts back to 60hz. This proves that variability still occurs.
@Tobiyas - I really like what fairphone stand for, and their ethics, but I've found their devices pricey, and judging from user reviews, they seem to be plagued with issues. Therefore I've never made the plunge in investing in one. I tend to modify my phones anyhow through adb and debloating them, and then using a range of apps from Simplemobiletools/Tibor Kaputa, via Fdroid.
