olgomar That is very interesting. The oscilloscope values are hard to see though. Was the input AC-coupled? Peak-to-peak voltage and frequency of the large spikes (50% brightness) the same as in the sine-like wave (38%)?
By the looks of it I would guess that at 50% the hardware switches from 240 Hz to 60 Hz like my OnePlus 3 does it at ~25%.
Like you I can not tolerate the 240 Hz but only the small 60 Hz pulsation.

But is it small on your device? The peak-to-peak and maximum voltages, which are hard to see in the photos are most interesting.

KM I have been interested in buying a Rigol oscilloscope, but I am unsure if the display flickers or is otherwise uncomfortable. Could you measure the display if you have the time? It seems no one has ever done this before. They seem to use a very special form of LCD that differs from standard ones.

Here is the experiment result of the Rigol measuring itself. It looks like a higher frequency than the OPT101 will allow so not sure what to make of it.

Does anyone know what is going on when the phone is rebooted and a green screen with two gears shows up saying "Android is starting...Optimizing App 1 of 1"??? I am freaking out.
I have never seen this before. I checked and automatic updates are deactivated.
Have they found another way through? I really do not want more surprises...

AGI I believe the Google Play Store updates itself automatically.

KM Thanks. It actually happens every time I shut the phone down. Like, if I switch off twice in a row, it runs that optimization again...it cannot be a real update...Looks like some kinda bug...

Pixel 3 is due in about 1 month. I'm hopeful that we will find it usable!

JTL I know, I'm trying to be optimistic. I wonder if it's possible to have some kind of therapy to make people less sensitive to PWM. I'm concerned because I don't believe OLED is going away anytime soon. For people that aren't us, OLED is great, it produces some really nice colors.

JTL Thanks, it does it all the time now. I googled and read that others have encountered a similar issue upon installing new apps. I did install two new apps recently. I will try to uninstall and see how it goes.

On a different note, my "classic" Nokia 3310 3G is giving me a hard time. Unusable. I cannot believe I am incapable of utilizing what should be the most basic of the phones. So I am in the quest for another solution. Has anyone tested Yotaphone 3? I remembered someone being satisfied with Yotaphone 2, both displays, but right now that model is only available on eBay for 3 times the price of the new edition...

Cannabis medicine is the closest to that goal I've found.

We need more reverse engineering research to disable PWM on Android phones, similar to what @Wootever did for Samsung phones. His work was great progress though.

Replying to my own post. I chatted with the vendor. The item is a case which fits on the backside of a few models of IPhone and offers a second, e-ink screen just for the purpose of reading e-books via a proprietary app, and a few other minor functions, like clock, alarm, etc. etc.
The e-ink screen cannot be used to make phone calls, surf the net and all that is typically done with a phone.
I also read a few reviews with regard to the e-reading experience. Not so positive.
Not what I was hoping...

Just a side note because I am confused how some of you talk about AMOLED PWM like it is unavoidable. It is not! There are more and more devices with which you can avoid PWM by setting the brightness manually. Maybe you know this but it did not sound like it.

I am sensitive to LED light and I have been using Samsung Galaxy S3 (I9300) for 3 years without any eye strain. The OS I use is Cyanogenmod 10.2 - still pretty fast. You can download it here:

Solf Thanks. I am not an expert. Do you mean you are using customized / homemade OS & apps? In case, is the reason that you had eyestrain with Android / Google Apps and found benefits by using those others?

AGI No, the original OS is too slow, the custom OS is just for speed. However, some people reported they get eye strain just after software update to Android 4.4.4. The Cyanogenmod 10.2 (Android 4.3) is the oldest software I could find.
