So. In retrospect, my eyes got tired using the iPhone 7+ but didn't ... strain ... per se.
I've now used the HTC 10 long enough to set it up, running Android 8.0 (it got Oreo, who knew?), and so far I'm mixed on it.
First of all, the battery life is not awesome. Doing initial setup and fooling around for 30-40 minutes has me down to 78%. Not stellar.
Second of all, it's... hard to focus on. Easier with my glasses off. This might be something I get used to, it might not.
It does NOT induce instant strain. I'm trying hard to find words to describe this, but...
The HTC m8, when using Lollipop, has ZERO strain. As did the iPhone 4s.
When I use the iPhone 7+, I can tell my eyes are working to focus but it doesn't hurt per se. They just get tired. The next morning they were a little bleary. I need to do a repeat evaluation.
When I update the m8 to Marshmallow firmware, it is INSTANTLY more painful. Actual eyestrain occurs.
This HTC 10... is just harder to focus on. The strain is slower to build, but I believe it is there. I don't know if this is a factor of the OS (Oreo), firmware (unknown), or screen technology.
I also have to turn the brightness up pretty high to be comfortable, lower brightnesses are very hard to use on this phone.
Night mode seems pretty useless, it just changes the screen to orange.
I may spend more time with the iPhone 7+ and render a final verdict, but I'm leaning towards ordering one from Verizon and getting used to it.
