OMG guys, I'm ... do some back reading here.

The AMD cards are TERRIBLE due to inability to disable FRC. Your best best are nVidia cards on Windows 7, specifically anything GeForce 970 or older.

Your second best is Windows 7 and Intel integrated, but only SOME Intel integrated. The 6700 with Intel 530 Graphics is especially ok, as far as Intel integrated cards go. Others are nowhere near as nice.

Your culprit here is likely FRC, or "temporal dithering". Also make sure you select the correct ICC color profile for your monitor.

I use windows 10. Just received a new monitor. Its an Lg 6 bit with frc. Still using the amd card. This is my best monitor yet for eye strain. First panel ever from LG. The frc or eye strain happens mainly with deep blacks while scrolling fast. For example, with the Amazon page.

I have had horrible luck with invidia but it may have been my lighting or the samsung panels used. But invidia installed on both win 10 and linux was not an improved experience over amd when i had those cards.

Since frc is the ussue, if i can get a ten bit panel that does not use frc, that should in theory solve the problem correct? Regardless of card

    This monitor with Linux Mint is quite magical. I took the amd video card out and just booted to linux mint and it has helped. i just wonder what a monitor without FRC, and LG panel, and on Linux Mint.

    just learned a way to install amd graphics on linux mint and I must say this is phenomenal.

    It was literally a one word change. From ubuntu to linuxmint.

    Talk about a 6 month relief. there is still some strain but I think it is because the monitor uses FRC.

    The question for me is should I try to get a 10 bit native panel or a an 8 bit native panel with out FRC. I talked to a representative from Benq. He said the gpu I have support 10 bit direct x. I may shoot for a 4k just to see if it helps.

    I also may get an NVidia graphics card to see if it helps but so far its good to have options. I can do linux mint with intel or amd graphics and I am okay. i dont feel like I am taking a beating for working at my computer. I especially like the way that when I type the amd graphics give me no strain. So combing over text is the norm and I am happy about this.

        It is an RX 570

        I had both an Invidia 970 and 1050 and used the lastest drivers. Up to about two weeks ago before switching to AMD. On Ubuntu I could tell the difference in strain from one driver to the next. it was less with the latest but just to know it varies like that is scary.

        I have intel HD graphics 530. I did not install on Linux Mint because I learned about Linux Plasma which is a world of difference.

        Plasma is written in QT5. I am learning that apple writes its own drivers for graphics cards. that is a massive deal. I think I am going to try a mac mini and with quantum dot screen. IPS is great but the VA panel contrast just does me in for writing, reading text.
        I had not idea this would be an issue for me. But if I am able to use a mac. I mean look I am totally against the fanboyism, but if they allow my window to the world to be that much better then who am i to not fall in line i guess. I mean I fought using apple for so long but if I am able to use there product and it gives me an advantage in productivity or ability to work with less effort due to strain caused from other operating systems I am crazy not to.

          I think amd's Vega architecture may be a big deal as long as they support Linux. I dont mean Open source linux drivers. I go to AMD's support site and I can download the driver and install it right there. With Plasma desktop experience and AMD direct support, and monitors Manufactuers' support for freesync. I mean its hard to see how anyone can beat that in terms of providing a better viewing experience with VR on the way. Entire companies working together to provide a solution to the end user similar to what Apple has done in the past. Apple making there own drivers, i read they started doing this in 2015, that is just so telling. Freesync causes AMD and Samsung to work together while plasma desktop environment is basically from what I am reading designed to be used on the mobile device.

          I just hate going to Apple because I feel like not having control over my dedicated GPU is kind of scary to be honest. I just love that. Choose the GPU, with a dedicated driver. but with Apple its a wrapped package with not the latest drivers but ones that provide the best user expereince which may be best for me at this time.

          I think Xubuntu is better than plasma Lubuntu. I am learning that it is more light weight. I am installing Elementary OS to see how that goes.

          Setting Blue to 100, red to 0, green to 0 on monitor on AMD graphics verses intel integrated has really helped me. I know everyone here mainly uses Invidia. This has helped on both Ubuntu and Windows. basically unusable operating systems before for serious use. This is on an IPS LG monitor with 6 bit+FRC dithering. I got rid of my quantum dot and so wish I didn't bc I would have like to try this on that monitor.

          Everywhere I read. Use warm colors. Use warm colors. but I have my monitor temperature at 7k right now. with zero green or red using a display port. give me a break. every human's eye has a preference and I think I am finding mine.

          Does anyone know of a good monitor calibration tool that can be used on both Linux and Windows? One that allows the use to tailor the Icc profile to make profiles that are more blue for instance than red or green. There is a sample one in Ubuntu and in def helps.

            Wrightpt1 There is software out there you can use to make a custom ICC profile, but I don't have any experience with it

              Went with x-rite i1 display pro. I read some about icc profiles here but not much about color calibration. Maybe didnt look hard enough.

              I def get diff strain when switching between icc profiles on ubuntu. Android does not have a color mngmt system. Its coming in the O release though so that my smartphone can be calibrated as well.

              Will report back on how calibrating the individual monitor helps verses included icc profiles.

                    ensete great question. I do not. There was a program i found for Windows that allow one to modify is slightly but when I did, the system did not recognize them as icc profiles. futhermore, i could only edit them slightly.

                    I am anxious to try the spectrometer out today. It seems the X-rite commercial software is a bit more buggy than the spydermonkey software but the X-rite spectrometer has better color accuracy from what I have read. DisplayCal is supposedly better software than both of these.

                    I saw some kits that were over 1000 from X-rite but they used the same spectrometer as the cheaper kits thankfully.

                    The process take approx. an hour and half at least wtih displayCal. For higher accuracy it is longer. When talking with the X-rite tech he said the the higher the white point one sets, the "bluer" the icc profile would be. He said there software went up to 9300K. So that is one way to modify it at least. or how to know what correlates to a more bluer icc profile. We got to this by me saying I wanted a blue tinted icc profile.

                        I'm thinking of buying a ~30-32 inch 4k monitor for myself and a color calibrator so I can get accurate colors.

                          ensete x-rite i1 display pro. It was 218 off Amazon. Makes a world of difference. My ips reminds me of the quantum color va panel from samsung now. Its incredible. Def not the same but it just allows my acreen to work together with the colors.

                          Also today, honestly been a day of hell. I received a power supply in for light strips that came out of an led tv. That type of lighting doesnt seem to conflict as much as other light have with the light coming out out of my screen. I think if placed properly can compliment it. Fingers crossed of course.

                          Everywhere i read, only one article said color calibration reduces eye strain. i for one can say it does. And the constant voltage leds are not good for lighting around a computer. Constant current in an ambient way has been the best for me thus far.

                              as far as the lights go. the set that I am using are the following:

                              I am using another pair, but something about those my eyes does not like. They have 2 leds per led module. While the above only have one.

                              The power supply I am using is the following.
                              HLG-120H-350A.

                              I prefer having these lights on as to siting in a dark room. This is the closest I have come to finding lights that seems to compliment my screen instead of work against it.

                              I have tried two suppliers off of alibaba and neither say they can make an led strip similar to the the model I provided above. They all want to put leds in series with sections of leds together in parallel.

                              I remember my eyes feeling different behind my va panel with quantum color. May try that with these lights. if that works hallelujah. But right now this is the closest I have come.

                              My LG panel with the lights mentioned above. I am using a cover that came out of the television for diffusion.

                              Here are the other strips I have tried: V580h1_Ld6_tldc2

                              These are a no go in my opinion. a local electronics technician that services tv told me these seem to have two leds per module compared to the model number mentioned above.

                              Also, the total voltage drop for the set of strips mentioned above seems to be 440 volts, the power supply is only ranked for 430. so taking away one strip from the total should fit the power supply perfectly if I am not mistaken.

                              I burned out some when trying. I had parts of my positive and negative wire exposed where I extended the wire to connect the leds and they tapped together and it ruined some strips in the set. Very sad moment.

                              I am only able to power 4 strips in the set and technically I am not in the constant current range of the power supply. I called mean well to see what happens when one is not in the constant current range I could not get clear answer other than it may not work properly. How it does not work properly is unknown.

                              I think I am going to try to measure the milliamps and see if it changes or moves but I am scared to touch them at this point. and am happy I have light that isn't out to get me I feel like.
