Hello, I bought a brand new M1pro MBP 14” a couple of months ago and have been having eyestrain ever since. I don’t get migraines like some people do, only bad eyestrain after about 20 minutes of using the device. Throughout the day, even if I take regular breaks, it seems to start sooner and get gradually worse until it becomes unbearable. I thoroughly tried different display settings as suggested here and in other forums such as presets, nightshift, scaling, brightness, dark mode, refresh rate and turned off font smoothing but nothing has done the trick for me.
The strain led me to go see a general optometrist who said that my glasses were update and that my eyes were fine. He didn’t seem to be aware that screens with pwm could lead to eyestrain in some people and just prescribed me eye drops (which didn’t help). I also took my MBP for him to look and he said the screen looked completely fine.
I am an architect and have pulled several all nighters throughout college and internships starring for long hours and computer screens and never had an issue with other screens. I currently own a windows desktop computer with a Dell UP2716D monitor and a late 2013 15” MPB which give me zero issues.
This led me to think that probably what is causing my eyestrain is pwm but I am torn because I used to have a Iphone Xs (which had PWM) a couple of years ago and had no issues with its screen but I recently spent a few hours using my wife’s M1 13”MBP at 100% brightness (should have no PWM according to notebook check) and had some eyestrain, albeit less than on the 14.
I need a laptop (preferably a mac) for travel and on the go work which is color accurate and can handle demanding tasks such as 3d modeling, rendering, photo and video editing. Do you guys think a fully specd M2 Macbook Air is worth a try or there is something going on with all of apple’s new laptops and I should just buy a windows laptop? If so, do you have recommendations?
