I struggle here and I need your advice.

For me it feels like modern AMD graphic chipsets are rendering colours very aggressively with heavy contrast between light and dark areas.

What devices I have tested

I have had heavy issues with these devices. Sudden eye fatigue, problems to focus properly and a slight dryness in my eyes on use immediately. Even after days of non-usage these symptoms stuck with me:

  • Steam Deck LCD (Linux)
  • Steam Deck OLED (Linux)
  • MinisForum HX80G (Windows 11)
  • Lenovo Legion GO (Windows 11)

All these devices have a mobile AMD graphics card in common. It does not matter if I connect them to an external display or use the internal display. I experienced the issue with these devices on the same external displays which I can use for hours with a subset of the devices listed below.

My issues with the Steam Decks might be related to PWM…

I have no issues at all with other devices such as:

  • PlayStation Portal
  • Nintendo Switch LCD
  • PlayStation 5
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • MacBook Pro 2020
  • MacBook 2016

I can use these devices for hours any problems. Again, I use these devices with the same displays that produced issues with the devices I cannot use.

What I see

For me it feels like the AMD graphics output burned into the screen with a laser with a heavy and tiring neon glow. It looks artificial through and through. I tried everything in the book from enabling night mode, reducing contrast, altering tint. In the end it looks like an industrial blueish glow while all other devices are much more smooth with a milder color rendition. I also thought of Windows 11 being the issue here, but I dug out an old 2010 laptop and installed Windows 11 onto it. The graphics look okay and workable in my opinion.

  • Do you have any suggestion what could be my issue?
  • How can I proceed further from here?

I have made some photos. As you may see from these photos the white is more bright than on the other devices, while the red has a more neon glow. This is how it feels for me and the big contrast makes it very unpleasant to look on for longer times. For me the colours feel way more aggressive on the Legion GO than on any other devices. I had the same impression with the devices on top.

I used https://www.kicker.de as an example because they have a red-white headline.

snimat the red looks super vibrant.. probably is using dcip3 I'd imagine which means could be using dithering/frc?

it's probably dithering at work here. Looks abnormally vibrant.
