Questions about temporal dithering

JTL why would the gpu output a 6bit image dithered to 8bit. 8bit has been the standard for a long time. Games have been encoded at 8bit for a long time.

So for pc side I hear with amd or nvidia you can turn off temporal dithering? Plus I hear nvidia cards don't dither even newer ones as that's reserved for quadro. Is this true? On the Intel side of things is there anyway to turn off dithering aside from ditherig.exe? Does ditherig.exe work on desktop solutions or is that only for laptops?

Because majority of laptops and cheap desktop displays are 6 bit, and the 6 bit depth can be hardcoded in drivers and such. See external displays with Macbooks, Intel graphics, etc.

All cards before GTX 900: Almost always not dithering
Some GTX 900: Possible dithering, eyestrain has been reported regardless of graphics driver, with other batches of 970 unaffected.
GTX 1000 series: Unsure, possibly similar to GTX 900 situation

JTL consoles are different though and the expectations is that consoles would be hooked up to a HDTV, which more than likely would be 8bit.

Display side dithering looks just like monitor dithering. Well, to the untrained eye, at least. Dancing pixels even on solid colors.

One thing that occurred to me that pushed me away from Dithering as a cause is that LED's on cars cause me eye strain and migraines too. There's certainly no video driver, HDMI connections, or display on an LED headlight causing any dithering. For me that was enough of a counterexample to eliminate dithering as a consideraiotn for the root cause of my problem.

ensete Yeah I think that there is some unknown, unaccounted-for combination of flicker and color that we're just overlooking. We tend to focus on dithering because it's an obvious source of "flickering" but ...

Are you having problems with LED headlamps? Or LED dash displays? I hate both. My LED dash display in my 2014 Ford Fusion makes my eyes very ... tired ... in a much shorter amount of time than standard road hypnosis would account for. I put a yellow film over it, and that helped somewhat. Honestly, my issue goes through phases. When I'm good with my game systems, and good with my laptops, and good with my TV's, and good with my monitors at work... I'm also good with car LED's. So whatever this is, it's real and it's physical in nature.

These. The LED Daytime Running Lamp (DRL'S) that more and more car manufacturers are putting on cars. Not only do I think they look incredibly stupid (they are like bedazzling on cars, who thinks that looks good?) they cause instant and severe eye strain making driving a real painful experience. Outlawing these is the main focus of lightmare.org and there are several European Associations seeking to outlaw DRL's altogether.

I don't have an LED backlit dashboard, so I can't comment on them

If these cause you issues I would encourage you to write your elected officals and the car manufacturers and express your concerns. Tell them you will explcitly not purchase any of thier vehicles as long as they are putting these lights on them. Sales are all they care about and if they see an impact to sales, they might start to take it seriously
