I don't really fully understand the problems with modern TVs beyond the obvious like PWM. Recently I managed to find a store that had TVs all playing the same content so they were actually comparable, and they were playing a film in cinema mode and stuff so not the horrible vivid mode we often see in stores. i was able to look at the settings and compare them. I viewed the Bravia 8 next to the X90L next to the Bravia 7.
I notice that when it comes to white text e.g. subtitles or rolling credits at the end, the OLED was significantly easier to look at. Even when I turn the brightness right down on TV such as the Bravia 7, the white text seems to "shimmer" a bit and it's hard to focus on, i think it's just far too bright for the dark background. I have no eyes problems and confirmed no astigmatism with optometrist. I struggle with this with my current TV X90L, i have to turn all subtitles transparent in the options which i never had to do in the past, but sometimes there is other pure white stuff on the screen that i can't control and it's hard to look at.
So I thought maybe OLED could be a good option BUT I notice that my eyes seem to feel a bit strained and sore after only 1-2 minutes watching the OLED screen. I didn't have this problem when looking at the mini-LED for example. I had to leave shortly so I didn't have a lot of time to compare but i had the impression that the OLED screen was somehow straining my eyes. I don't know how, because it overall looks rather dark, even at max brightness, and I know that the flicker is supposed to be minimal. I also notice that the stutter when some things pan or when credits are scrolling is really distracting to my eyes and really worse on the OLED. i checked the motion settings on all the TVs i was looking at and it was the same on all (all sony tvs, they were at the front of the store + i think it's nice that they apparently do upscaling and processing well). however the OLED was worse for stutter even though they all had image smoothing on low, i wonder if this strains my eyes somehow? i don't even know
However on the X90L and Bravia 7 they have some problems like whites are the same brightness as the surface of the sun, even when the TV is on lowest brightness. i currently have X90L and it's ok sometimes like with content which is overall darkish, cinematic TV and stuff, i can watch comfortably. but it hurts to play games on which isn't the case when i play games on my laptop, or on my switch (old switch, not OLED). I don't know exactly what role PWM might be playing too. i avoid PWM in all my other devices.
My husband wants a high quality nice TV and I also would like a nice TV that I can use without problems but I just don't even know what's on the market that would be good for me to try.
