Yes, if monitor is 8-bit, no dithering applyed in win10. Not sure for win11

Since the display is good but quite old, I would not like to invest in additional hardware, especially if it is not certain that it would work. Therefore, in case I do not manage to find a solution with the current display, I would appreciate some advice regarding a new display.

I know I should look for a display with no dithering, no flicker, no PWM, no FRC, and preferably high brightness.

Is refresh rate important and if so, what refresh rate would be sufficient (I am not a gamer)?

Since my vision is far from perfect I need the text to have reasonable size. (currently I have a 24inch 1920x1200 display and I use windows scaling (125%). I assume that this implies that I should look for a display with 1920X1200 or 1920X1080. Is that right? Is there any reason to prefer one of these over the other?

I currently have a 24 inch display. It is big enough for me. Is there a reason to prefer a 27 inch?

What other specs should I take into consideration?

moonpie Thanks. I use a dGPU becuase the screen is 1920x1200 and I have to connect it with a DVI-D cable. I was afraid that using a cable that is not DVI-D to DVI-D would cause additional problems. Was I wrong?

moonpie Thanks. I am not sure I understand what you wrote. My previous computer also had a dGPU and I used Windows10 125% scaling. I had no problems. Now with the new dGPU and Windows 11 125% scaling I have a problem. Is it possible that Windows 10 scaling does not cause problems whereas Windows 11 scaling does?

I use logical scaling of 150% on Intel with all versions below 11 and it's fine.

Sunspark What is logical scaling? Is this the same as Window's scaling? I use Windows scaling on 125%. I had no issues with this on my previous Win 10 computer. But I do have problems on my new Win 11 computer.

moonpie Do you mean I have to turn off the Windows11 125% scaling? and if so, is there another way to be able to see properly? (I use the Windows scaling because increading text size is not sufficient, as everything elese remains too small).

You will never be happy as long as you use Windows 11. You can try a hundred settings, Wind 11 is simply bad for your eyes. It was the same with me. Only when I went back to Win 10 my eyes could relax. My eyesight is now better than ever.

I use Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC and receive updates until 2032.

NST17 I would not agree. There are millions of institutions that still use windows 10, even NASA. Its more of the fear mongering from Microsoft to lure users to upgrade. But after installing you need to create registry keys for target release version and set it to 22H2, so that it does not force you to upgrade.

Has anything changed for you in terms of how your Windows feels over the last few weeks?

I've been able to mostly use Win 10 LTSC over the last few months but something happened in the last 2-3 weeks and I'm getting symptoms again (previously I had been fine all versions of Windows 10 until something happened last May 2024, I'm assuming one of the updates)

I can't tell if something changed with Windows itself or something else. I can't see anything obvious for Windows. I use Office/Teams/etc. for work and I'm wondering if there has been some kind of update in how that software is rending similar to what happened in Windows 10.

So far I've never found a computer running Windows 11 that doesn't give me symptoms.

NST17 I haven't tested, but supposedly Windows 11 keys also share Windows 10 licensing, so an 11 key might work for it.

ocean10 This is something I am experencing. Installing windows 11, but then after sometime eye strain gets really bad. Then installing back windows 10, and it is such a relieve, but not for long. Something happens after some time, and again eye strain. Its odd. Only thing I know for sure is a bad thing - do not install optional windows driver updates, I think those are marked as optional for a reason. Better to instal from vendor apps or websites, or not to install at all. Also, I do not know what is architecture differences between windows 10 and 11, but maybe Microsoft after realising that there will be a lot of institutions that will not upgrade, decided to push many things from windows 11 into windows 10 backwards. Some of those things may have been related to eye strain causes.

I updated to Windows 11 in May 2024, used it for two months and experienced massive eye problems.

In July 2024 I went back to Windows 10 21H2 IoT Enterprise LTSC and have been using it ever since. My eye problems are completely gone.

Donux Interestingly, I've found that making a System Restore point when Windows 10 is working alright, then rolling back if it feels strange later, consistently reverts whatever rendering change happened between those states. (Probably would be a good idea to compare the registry from the the restore point, and the "bad" registry right before rolling back to the restore point… haven't done this yet)
