Hello

I have never used e-ink, what should I expect so that it won't be a shock?

I cannot really afford buying something and having to return it or not be able to use if for common use:

  • web browsing
  • typing and text editing
  • viewing videos
  • making videocalls

All using my non e-ink android phone and windows laptop but using e-ink screen as external monitor.

I have seen others using e-ink readers and I have noticed that most seem to have a grey background and faded black fonts which is far from ideal for reading. Aren't there any high contract (true black and true white) e-ink monitors?

Also, it seems all of them are glossy, aren't there really any matte ones?

Last, in terms of moving visual elements as in videos or when you scroll webpages and interact with web forms, is there any issue?

Thank you

Well first thing is they are much slower than a normal 60hz monitor. Dasung has their revo line which is much faster for videos and such. I think some people did game on them but its only 33hz. I personally dont watch videos on eink just web browsing, email, fb messenger, etc. (Text based stuff)

I have the dasung paperlike 13.3 hd-f monitor(white one) before the revo model and I love it. Only way I can use a computer at the moment. I use it on text mode only and on the second to fastest speed mode. Text mode is more black and white only. If you look at older b&w eink panels they may appear darker but the newer ones like mine are using new carta panels. The color eink panels are using kaleido 3 panels which are a lot darker since they have a color filter. Dasungs color filter sorta has a screen door effect which I didnt like. I think some other eink devices like boox and kobo tablets have a better color filter with less of that effect. Color eink is a little behind black and white, especially being lower PPI while b&w eink is higher PPI.

Web browsing is kind of ok. I have a shortcut to move content between my eink monitor and MacBook screen though as even on a colour monitor some UI is sometimes unclear, to watch a video, or to look at an image in detail. I mainly use ChatGPT instead of the web now though, which is eink optimised.

Typing and text editing are both excellent. I prefer using an e-ink monitor with MacOS to trying to be productive on an e-ink tablet though.

Viewing videos, and video calls are so unsuited to e-ink that I just use a regular screen for this.

'All using my non e-ink android phone and windows laptop but using e-ink screen as external monitor.' One thing to consider is the quality is lower on e-ink monitors compared to whole devices that have been specifically customised for e-ink. So, for example the experience of using a regular phone hooked up to an e-ink monitor will be very poor compared to using a Bigme Hibreak Pro e-ink phone.

'I have seen others using e-ink readers and I have noticed that most seem to have a grey background and faded black fonts which is far from ideal for reading. Aren't there any high contract (true black and true white) e-ink monitors?' No, but also very high contrast would give most people eye-strain. Premium paper books often intentionally use off-white paper, and screen designers often use dark grey in preference to white.

'Also, it seems all of them are glossy, aren't there really any matte ones?' Screen surface is one of the biggest quality differences between e-ink devices, and it's hardly ever properly discussed in reviews. I'd describe most as satin finish (in-between matte and gloss). The more gloss screens appear to have better depth and clarity but glare. The more matte screens the opposite. A small number of premium devices use etching techniques for the best of both worlds e.g. Kindle Voyage, Bigme Hibreak pro, Boox Palma and Tab series.

'Last, in terms of moving visual elements as in videos or when you scroll webpages and interact with web forms, is there any issue?'

Yes, watch videos of the devices. A small number of manufacturers have significantly improved on the standard e-ink refresh techniques (for example Dasung, Boox and Bigme). But it's still an issue in the high quality modes - the fast modes sacrifice things like clarity and ghosting. It's best to avoid animation, and use paging instead of manual scrolling.
