For the text readability thing, try Double Invert on Mac:
BetterDisplay menu -> Color Mode -> Inverted Framebuffer
BetterDisplay menu -> Image Adjustments -> Invert Colors
^ both of these at the same time
Since I heard that you didn't want any of the other effects of betterdisplay, make sure to turn off it's "keyboard controls display brightness" and "apple hardware brightness control" features. Don't use the virtual screen features.
This should prevent the "negative" effects of betterdisplay you were experiencing.
Keep betterdisplay's "GPU dithering" setting at the default (aka don't touch it) and use Stillcolor instead to disable dither.
This way, you should still be able to use betterdisplay (required) to activate Double Invert without triggering any of its other features.
AshX BetterDisplay makes the display chaotic though, whereas Stillcolor does not.
The difference is that betterdisplay sends the "disable dither" command every few minutes in order to "ensure it stays disabled" even in rare cases where the Mac tries to re-activate it,
Whereas, Stillcolor only sends the command once (but can lead to dithering accidentally re-activating in these very rare cases, e.g. when resuming from hibernation after the battery has drained)
The repeated disabling is probably confusing the Mac in some way that makes the image slightly more chaotic.
Overall, using Stillcolor instead and not touching the dithering option in betterdisplay should allow you to use other useful betterdisplay features, like Double Invert, without causing the issues you experienced with dithering.
Essentially, Double Invert basically tricks the Mac into disabling some image processing and makes text appear more stable. (If you need to know more about why this works, I can explain later)
I've tested this and found it creates a visible effect and improvement on other Apple Silicon Macs.
That is, Double Invert has actually worked to increase text readability and make the screens of some other Macs marginally more tolerable to me.
Since you're already having a decent experience with your Touchbar MBP, using Double Invert through this method should probably help with the remaining text readability, as that's exactly what it improves for me on other Macs!
AshX I also have a bit of trouble reading text. I don’t know if this is a dithering issue or if it’s just a computer issue for me.
This is an IPS LCD issue.
Reading text for me is fine on TN LCDs, CRTs, ASV LCDs, EPD/e-ink, and OLED (even the worse batches of OLEDs are still generally OK for me in terms of cognitively understanding text, eyestrain aside)
However, I've consistently had issues with reading text in general on IPS LCDs and this is why I (personally) switched away from all IPS LCD devices.
In your case, that wouldn't be possible though as you're relying on a Mac which -- everything 2013 and later -- are all IPS LCD. I hope that Double Invert helps, though, as it slightly improved text readability on IPS for me
