Differences between iPhone 11 units

This is getting RIDICULOUS!!

The only tolerable iphone is the 11 that i was using it since day one. Last year i tested an SE2022 and my eyes burnt like hell and got nausea.

2 weeks ago i found a sealed iphone 11 and purchased it instantly.... i sold my old 11 and started using the fresh 11..... it gives me dry eyes and mild dizziness....

SO WTF is going on?

Are we sure our issues are PWM related....?

I installed a dark screen protector and the fresh 11 is more manageable but not pain free still.....like my older iphone 11.........

The panel supplier lottery definitely exists for iPhone 11.

For example, I've needed to look at my dad's iPhone 11 every now and then and it's OK, still not really something I'd say is "great", but I'm able to look at it, use it, and read text on his phone when I've needed to without any serious issues. The light source coming from the backlight seems OK-ish.

I feel like some people on the forum (such as those who are OK with some IPS panels) would find the panel on my dad's 11 fine for them.

On the other hand, one of my friend's iPhone 11 has a totally different panel, which is very reminiscent of the terrible panel I experienced once on an iPhone SE 2020 -- this friend's 11 probably has a panel made by the same manufacturer.

The glass on this friend's 11 has so much glare and reflects light super weirdly (I get immediately dizzy looking into the glass even when their phone is off, which doesn't happen at all with my dad's 11). In addition, the friend's 11 screen is very hard to read for me, everything looks like it's floating above the screen or glowing.

And, even looking at something on my friend's phone for only two minutes causes me some double vision and immediate disorientation, and I actually have to take a bit of time to re-collect myself after looking at their phone. The backlight also appears very harsh.

Meanwhile, my dad's iPhone 11 is not at all like this -- his phone is still decent enough for me to tolerate looking at and reading for a similar time, and I don't experience any immediate dizziness with my dad's phone.

I've seen this "much worse" panel my friend has, on a good amount of other 11s as well, so I know that both the decent panel on my dad's phone, and the other terrible one, are both stock / genuine panels that can ship with the iPhone 11 (not replacements)

I've seen both my dad's 11 and this friend's 11 running the same, latest iOS 18 version. Both devices do NOT have any screen protector.

TLDR: The panel supplier lottery is real, and can entirely make or break a phone's usability for me

There is plenty of evidence that the iPhone 11 dithers heavily, plus there are several other factors other than pwm, please use the search function

I am thinking to purchase an Oled iPhone and replace the screen with XO7 soft oled from mobile sentrix….. it is LTPS and some say that it uses DC dimming….

So the differences do not lie in the model, the IOS, the screen protector. Could the difference be caused by different screen manufacturers? I mean, iPhone 11's screens are made by three different manufacturers, namely Sharp, Toshiba and LG. It will be great if you can check the screen manufacturers of the iPhone 11 you have seen.

It seems sharp panel for iPhone 11 is the best. Mine is from Toshiba

You mean your old iPhone 11 is using Sharp panel and the new iPhone 11 is using Toshiba panel? And they are of the same IOS? Then the reason could be due to different screen panels.

I finally made 11 to work…. While double invert didn’t make any difference to the oleds i tried it worked with 11…. now it’s almost tolerable. But i ll continue searching for one with a sharp panel.

Your iphone 11 is using Toshiba screen right? Try to restore it from factory setting. It may help. My iphone 11 with Toshiba screen is comfortable to use with IOS 16. It suddenly caused some degree of strain with IOS 17 and when it was updated to IOS 18, it became unusable. I just could not stare it more than few minutes. But some day I tried to restore it, I immediately found that the colour are a bit different, and the texts and colours became less sharp and vibrant but somehow it was much more comfortable to see. But you may need to restore it several times. The first time I restored the iphone 11 it didnt change a bit, with second attempt it became much better.

DFU, recovery mode, "Erase all content and settings" or normal restore?

ITwebs i had an old 11 and found a new one sealed and purchased it. I just transferred my old 11 data to the new one after updating to ios 18.

When you mean restore you mean to erase everything and set it up fresh setting by setting ?…. app by app?……without restoring from icloud for example?

I used this way to restore it:

General -->Transfer or Reset iPhone -->Erase All Content and Settings

I solely used the phone to restore it, no other device was used to complete the process.

ITwebs I understand if you don't want to mess up what works, but if you encounter another iPhone that's unusable after an OS upgrade (or similar scenario) I'd be very interested in what a DFU restore does for it.

My understanding is that a DFU restore is a more low level initialization of the device, and is more "atomic", as in, the end result should always be the same assuming you're restoring the same IPSW no matter how many times you consecutively run the operation (SHSH blobs notwithstanding).

ITwebs after you erase the phone. You restore it from iCloud or you set it up fresh and downloading all apps one by one ?

As my phone is rather new, I did not restore old data. I just erased all data and restore it, without recovering old data.
