OLED can be messing with the frequencies of the brain by subjecting it to the brightness dip every refresh. PWM would be worse still. You have a screen doing something unpleasant that you are trying to view for extended periods of time, and I would guess it can cause cumulative damages in complex ways.

There is a neurological phenomenon called photic driving that sounds similar to this. I don't have any in-depth knowledge of it nor do I know if it has any real relevance in the context of modern screens and their health effects but it might be worth looking into.

QuitePainful That shows our brain's consciousness impacts the reality we know, and I am wondering if OLED with flicker influences how we think and behave. There could be studies showing impacts of OLED phones on people versus LCD phones, and it is plausible the OLED phones have a therapeutic benefit for the overlords.

With OLED screens, it starts with dry, burning eyes and dull pain. It becomes excruciating pain after a while, vertigo, and migraine headaches. The first stage usually comes after an hour or so, but sometimes much shorter). How long it takes for the second part to start varies a lot, but once it starts, I cannot look at any screens (OLED or LCD, TV or phone) without it feeling like a nail is being driven into my eyes. It takes one to three days for this to reset to where I can comfortably use screens again.

I know what he means by the harsh sensations caused by OLED phones when not bandaged up with a software screen dimmer and contrast reducer.
