Well, I figured I’d post an update since receiving my 2011 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display on Dec 19th. It’s been nearly 2 and a half weeks of testing and I’ve tried probably more with this combination than I have in the past year of trying to find a usable device.
The good
It’s a beautiful display. Looks better than most of the modern displays and I appreciate the color accuracy and build quality. You can tell it isn’t a modern KSF or QD display and I like that it’s not very bright. I did my best to try to detect PWM and couldn’t find any. If it’s there, it’s very high frequency.
The bad
Unfortunately this hasn’t solved any of my problems. I’ve gotten further with this display than any other. I’ve tried every conceivable setting: disabling dithering, night shift, low brightness, high brightness, reduce transparency, reduce motion, sitting close to the display, sitting far from the display, looking at the display from across the room, looking at the display with natural daylight, and so on and so on. I’ve tried different resolutions, I’ve tried dark mode, I’ve tried everything.
As soon as I turn this thing on just opening a Google homepage causes trouble focusing and sometimes even dizziness. Maybe this is just a me problem, I don’t know. I’ve made similar tweaks to the internal MBP screen. That panel is calm one minute and erratic the next.
The Thunderbolt Display does have an extra pane of glass that causes a slight double image you can see reflected in the display when it’s off. No idea if this is a trigger.
So yeah. Other than testing every incremental version of MacOS, I think I’m done. My last two tests will be connecting my 2015 15” MBP on Catalina to see if that makes a difference. I guess I can even downgrade it to Mojave for the hell of it. And then I’m going to try with a ton of backlighting in the room.
I wouldn’t dissuade anyone from trying this combination. This could just be a “me” problem with my awful health thanks to long COVID.
Anyway, it’s been a pleasure being part of the community through this ordeal. Thank you to everyone who has tried to help. I think I need to take a break from all this for a while. There’s only so much one can do trying to isolate triggers when you’re dealing with an operating system like MacOS that seems to like to apply dithering whenever it wants to, despite attempts at disabling it.
