What was the reason why we only talk of Dasung, and Onyx was discarded?

https://onyxboox.com/boox_maxpro

Is it because of poorer quality, or because it works under Android with all the potential problems deriving from updates?

I bought a secondhand Dasung Pro for 500 euro (I`m in Ireland) with great expectations but it gave me an instant headache when connected to my Windows 7 PC. Even if it had not given me a headache I could never use it because it was useless for web browsing/youtube videos etc. About the only practical use would be word documents or reading books.

tonyshan Thanks for your feedback, and sorry to hear that.
Everyone's experience and problems are different, but from the comments above I am more and more reluctant to purchase one such monitor. I do not have anymore big expectations it would be a game changer...

I have a DASUNG Paperlike HD and I love it. I cannot imagine to live without it because it´s the only way to not have eye pain. I´m not able to use any other normal screen as they produce me eye pain in just a few seconds. The only thing that I miss with DASUNG are the colours....

I had eye-strain, headaches, and other neurosurgical issues caused by flicker so severe that it forced me to retire. I currently use a 3 Dasung paperlike pro set up, and it allows me to continue to be a free lance programmer. for a long time i could only use the e-ink monitors and they were a life saver! the Dasung does not have any noticeable lag for office productivity/programming sorts of things. I think the other options that run android are pretty laggy. Now that the problems I had are less severe I am able to add a true 8 bit VA panel with high dpi 8 feet away and still suffer no ill effects. My issues were so severe in the early days an MRI showed measurable tissue death in my brain. the Dasung takes a little getting used to, but if you have severe issues with flicker it is a total solution. if your video card is dithering, you will be able to see it on the e-ink very clearly. it shows up as swarming on the screen. when you disable it, the screen becomes static and wonderful. I ordered all three of my Dasungs strait from China in 3 separate purchases without any issue (much cheaper). 3 years in, they are my daily drivers, with an additional VA when color is needed. for me this solution was not optional, I would not be able to work without it. I would love to get the new HD versions, but I have too much invested in my 3 paperlike pro set up. the bezels between the monitors are also a bit of a pain, but far less of a pain than headaches and brain damage.

The PaperLike pro does not use temporal dithering, it has different types of static dithering, but they dont cause flicker. When I dissable the FRC on the video card there is 0 flicker on the PaperLike Pro

Probably not the correct place for this comment, but I also noticed I had sort of a Pavlovian PTSD response to the high pitched sound of a PC, probably due to the the fact that I suffered so severely with that sound in the background. Not directly related to the flicker issue, but building a silent PC has helped me relax and concentrate tremendously.

ShivaWind I'm quite irritated by the high frequency "whine" of newer laptops too 😐

Can you tell us what components you're using in it? Windows/Linux?

That's not as simple a question as it sounds. I use many computers and virtual machines. My interface pc mainly uses dell quadro k4000 video cards with the NVIDIA 390 driver https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/151568/en-us. as for building a silent PC, I went with the unorthodox approach of putting it 2 rooms away and used 50 foot display port cables. My monitors are Dasung Paperlike Pros (3) and Benq GC2870s (2). I have a box full of video cards, but I only use Nvidia now because of the dithering setting in the driver. The OS is usually some version of linux Mint 19.

I also never use any LCD without Uvex Skypers on. the expensive pc glasses are worthless, the cheap orange safety glasses are much better. I don't think this is as much about blue light as it is about blocking one channel in the RGB signal. if blue is blocked you can't see 1/3 of the sub pixels, eliminating one channel of flicker (due to polarity inversion). That is my hypothesis anyway, since natural light has a ton of blue light and is fine for me.

I also use no compositor Marco(no compositor) and disable anti-aliasing and never use and sort of font enhancing algorithm. I also disable hardware acceleration in Firefox. I am not sure how much effect these things have, as the dithering setting in the driver and using a true 8 bit va panel without FRC seem to be by far the biggest issues, but it seems like the problem is cumulative and gets worse after longer exposure so you can never be too careful. In one environment the same sorts of symptoms seemed to be triggered by a very high freq sound (maybe?): I know for sure things that cause the issue, but I am not sure how comprehensive the list is. I am convinced it is a sensory input disorder caused by prolonged neural entertainment. there have never been any studies on the prolonged effects of neural entrainment. If smoking safety studies only looked at the dangers of a single cigarette, they would be deemed completely safe.

ShivaWind I did think about a silent build, with Seasonic PSU, Nofan and KalmX Nvidia GPU. That's on hold for now due to this whole flicker situation. The NUC I bought recently has a silent mode in the BIOS and is pretty quiet, but turboboost always kicks in, I can switch that off and fan speeds remain stable (and very quiet) but lose a bit of CPU overhead. Either way, that machine isn't in use due to symptoms 🙁. I'm not selling it yet as I eventually want to use it!

I saw the link on another thread re: Color e-ink. That is exciting news and it would be great if it could achieve 60hz one day.
