Nvidia - Disable Dithering Fix (Windows)

Thanks to tfouto for sharing this link on another thread.

A member of GeForce forums has posted a registry tweak to change dithering settings in Windows - Temporal/Spatial etc - and to disable.

Please can others check out the link below, follow the instructions in the post and please report back with the outcome.

diop I never noticed a difference with a GTX 1070 under Linux with their dithering options, still painful as always. I wouldn't be surprised if the registry value worked the same as the Linux driver settings.

JTL so why is it painfull? Do dithering disabling is fake? Or is it something other than dithering than hurt your eyes?

This was my experience also. I tried the linux option to disable dithering. Still got eye strain / pain.

With an EVGA 3080.

I suspect the case for the "bad" 9xx/10xx cards.

In the linked thread there's a forum member with a 1080 GTX who shared comparison photos. They show the registry values work for him, fixing banding issues. I wonder if there are "good" 10xx cards out there and he has one of them. Because if he had a bad card, where temporal dithering supposedly is always forced by the GPU, why would he have such terrible banding in the first place?
The "forced GPU dithering" theory may have to be reconsidered?

KM weird this guy monitor is true 8 bit panel. So even if dithering was disabled, it should not be visible such banding.

I realize I sound like a broken record here, but wait for me to get the video capture solution and then we'll have some empirical testing done (I already have a "bad" 1070 that always looks "noisy" even in the BIOS setup so I think that would be good to start with.)

Should have something to announce about this in early January if everything goes well (university and work permitting)

I didn't have any Problems with this card since last year when I had to set up the very old OS again. Changed from 32bit Win 7 to 64bit Win7. Now I get the eyestrain from this system.

The registry trick didn't make any difference for me.

Next week I'll get a new computer at work. Maybe I can try out this also there.

So to make this work, do I only need to edit the registry file? or do I need to install the software mentioned?

Seagull I think the software mentioned was used to generate the correct registry values to interact with the Nvidia driver.

From what I can see just import the "ditherState - Disabled" line to your registry and it should work.

Please can anyone testing this update this thread with results - very interested to know how it works out.

In theory this ought to work unless dithering is enabled in hardware. We still don't know what is going on with VBIOS dithering/flicker.
