  • Adding a "+1" does nothing but pointlessly bump a thread with no new useful information. Not everything needs to be Facebook with likes and validation hits.

I have a Kobo and it's fine. Also afraid to try new Android based. Which phone did you buy? The Hisense A5? There is depressing little news on it now as all the posts and threads have died entirely.

    • kammerer

Other distributions are painful on that hardware? Can you test the Kubuntu on other hardware and see if its good elsewhere? Any theories?

      • I would not use Kapton tape...it's not optically clear. Try some "clear"sello/scotch tape or packing tape to see what I mean. Even if it looks clear it adds a muddy layer and makes things worse. If blue light blocking/tinting is really helping you then you need optical grade of whatever tint works in/on the glasses...or a filter on the devices. Putting filter material or tape close to the eyes isn't going to work out as it affects your vision all over.

      • It's frustrating to have to ask this here...this group of people should know how relevant and important it is...but when you list a device, computer etc you have to list details too like OS, version and updates etc, GPU etc...even better if you know screen manufacturer etc since we know that varies. You can't just say "I use X Phone 2 and it's great!" or "Laptop X has solved my problem" and think that helps anyone.

        • vaz Please put OS and versions as well...half the people replying are not doing this and its very relevant.

        • Pudentane Are those videos the same computer? The second one looks like PWM banding you can sometimes see with a quick phone camera test. I don't know if that is what you mean by "I didn't expect that", but if it is then that implies Open Suse is using PWM at whatever brightness setting that is where Windows is not. I have never heard of that happening. I can tell you xrandr gamma and brightness settings did nothing for me. Nor did using PWM free displays. My comfortable computer has banding like that visible on a phone camera as well...AND I am not entirely sure that test is accurate because if you rotate the phone the banding will rotate with it which makes me think its the phone shutter rolling rather than the screen flickering? So far it seems you are just discovering the things everyone does when they start trying different settings...that nothing seems to matter for the actual strain.

          • Sunspark I think it'd be fine.

Well there is the possibility than Android dithering etc is straining...and like everything else its hard to separate causes. Others have reported e-ink devices bothering them and we don't know if its lighting or flickering or what. I've been burned enough not to be super excited.

          • reaganry Onyx is releasing one soon as well. Not sure if it would be appreciably better or worse. I really wish there were e-ink laptops and larger monitors than 13". Off to bed. Let me know if you order one. I am fighting the urge to make a desperation impulse buy since I need a phone so bad.

          • reaganry I am hoping this works out. She said the battery is still going after 3 days so that's encouraging. The only major drawback at first glance...if the phone doesn't strain I mean...is the camera. You won't be able to see your photos and videos as they appear without uploading them to something else. I'd accept that for a device without strain....but the camera is one of my big uses. Looking forward to her full review.

I really hate buying stuff from China like that due to shipping issues for warranty etc. It seems they also don't accept returns for anything but it being broken or them sending you the wrong thing. Also cect says "only 5 left" but who knows if thats a perpetually low sales tactic. I am going to sleep on it. Really tired of spending and losing.

            • reaganry You going to get one? 265 for me is too steep right now just to test, after how much stuff I have bought trying to solve this, but if enough reports said it was a winner I'd suck it up. I am also afraid Android dithering might be the problem and its still going to hurt me. Some people said the Dasung panels still strained them so its not a silver bullet. I think I'd prefer the black and white honestly. Don't want to add a complication.

*Just remembered someone here posted it strained them...they were going to try it without the frontlight and report back...and never reported back. So it's possible the frontlight uses PWM as well. Always something.

              • Slacor That video seems the normal behavior to me...as it moved the page down once you reached the last highlighted search term on the shown page. For me in both browsers it got even weirder and weirder when I checked to be sure it was still acting as I said. After searching for "matte display" in the forum search box I chose the first result "Eyestrain only on monitors with matte finish?" but it doesn't load the discussion on the top of the page...rather in the middle around an @andc comment: "Some cases of eye strain may be actually related to glossy finish". If I CTRL-F "matte" from there or the top of the page either way, it always starts on 2 out of 21 matches in the CTRL-F search bar but nothing is highlighted. If I ENTER or use the arrows it counts up to 7 out of 21 without doing anything at all (and manually scrolling finds nothing highlighted anywhere in the discussion)...and when it gets to 8 out of 21 it jumps to the word "matte", in the title of the thread and its highlighted. From then on it goes down through the highlighted terms like normal. 1 out of 21 seems to be the "matte" from the "matte display" in the forum search box but that never comes up first..only after the first weirdness and it pops back up to the top. Seems 2-7 are invisible somewhere between the forum search box and the title, but still being detected? Same behavior in FF and Chrome. Very...very...very strange. I guess I was entering threads this way via search...CTRL-F wasn't highlighting or moving from several ENTER hits and I assumed it was never going to work and gave up. Now that I know whats up I can work around it, but I was assuming it was just totally broken as I never kept trying beyond the 6 attempts.

              • Slacor Yes but I have just discovered this weirdly only happens if I arrive in the discussion via this forum's search box. If I click on a discussion from the list on the front page etc, and then use CTRL-F in said discussion, the behavior is normal. For example, so we are on the same page about what I think is "normal" CTRL-F searching behavior, if I am on a Wikipedia page and CTRL-F "apples", normal browser behavior as I know it is the search bar will show "x of X results" and highlight the first one or the one in the current view. Then hitting ENTER or using the search box arrows moves to the next highlighted search term. If I enter a discussion here from the list of them and search a term this also happens as expected. BUT...if I enter a term in the forum search at top for say "matte display", and then choose one of the results which takes me to that discussion, and then CTRL-F "matte" or whatever to try and find each instance of that or any other term as above...the page doesn't move but the cursor and highlighting apparently do and the "x of X" number counts down as if its jumping to the next...but again the content on the page stands still and I have to scroll to find the next instance....which in a very long thread is uncomfortable. I had mostly been arriving in discussions that way to look for things so it seemed a universal problem on the forum. Very odd it's just with those conditions.

I've been agitated by most of your posts for a while now and if I could find an ignore function on the site I'd have used it. But you got what you wanted...conflict. Some people post to argue and fight. It's common online and it creates so much noise. You needed an outlet and used others here for that. I think that's wrong of you...but it's clear you will always feel the victim and fight back if anyone says anything you disagree with. I'm done with it. I just got sick of seeing your constant arguing cluttering up the thread.

                  • @Maxx nobody is telling you that your experience is objectively wrong...as you are doing to others directly and taking everything as some attack as if you are a victim here. You are fixated on PWM. Maybe it is...maybe it isn't the problem. Maybe another flicker is and you THINK its PWM. Maybe it is 100% PWM for you. I know its not for me and you don't seem to apply the same respect to others you demand for yourself in saying "I KNOW WHATS WRONG WITH ME" over and over. You are rude and aggravating, and I have been patient every time I felt like saying this so far, and you are not suffering more than the rest of us. Many of us already have lost jobs and cannot use devices. Stop taking it out on us. You aren't the only one here.

The wiki makes me click on each post which brings me back to the thread as well to be able to read the entire post. In the main forum if I use CTRL-F and Arrow Keys in both Firefox and Chrome rather than jumping to the highlighted search term it just count them down in the bottom bar as if its scrolling them but doesn't move at all...even if I wait. I just want to quickly see all posts with the search term and there is no way to do that here for some reason...as with every other website. It's frustrating when software breaks normal UX. The fact that one user is ranting away making the existing phone post longer and longer is making it impossible to manually find things as well if one IS inclined to scroll for an hour or more. All of these issues even worse on mobile.

                      • The "Usable Smartphone" thread has too many comments now to browse easily, and for some reason both browsers I have used cannot CTRL-F search correctly within it. So can people please list what phones and OS they are using that work the best or even better without strain? All of you who posted "This seems good I will update" and never did...could you update now please? Thanks.
