Hi, I'm a 25 years old french guy.
I'm a computer scientist since I graduated from engineering school two years ago.
As long as I remember, I got eyestrain from white neon tubes in most shops, we thought it might be allergy at the time, but I found out later it was because of the lighting.
I can use CRT and CCFL monitors all the time with no particular problem. 5 years ago, I decided to build my own computer and I bought a screen at the same time, an ASUS VN247H, TN Panel. That's when I detected all my problems : in a few minutes, I started to feel "brain-fried", had an headache and a strong eyestrain. I started to get around 6-8 floaters in two days (maybe because the muscles around the eyes got really tense ?). I have them since then. It also gave me visual snow that gets worse when I try an unusable screen.
What works for me :
Phones : I used to have Galaxy S1, S2, S3, Sony phones (Z1 compact, Z3 compact). I currently use Sony X compact.
TV : Surprinsingly, I feel totally OK with my Sony Bravia TV KD49XD8305, I can use it for hours. I also have an old 40" LG LCD TV that's fine. Some Philips LED TV seem to be fine (except for the LEDs behind if they are Ambilight models).
Monitors : Monitors with CCFL backlight
Laptop : I've been using a DELL Latitude 5580 (W10 build 1709 and then 1803) for two years at work with no problem. It has a 940MX, IPS Screen, and it's just a slightly tiring to stare at it for many hours.
What doesn't work :
Phones : It seems like most latest Samsung and Apple phones are not ok for me. I get eyestrain quite quickly.
TV : Most Samsung TV give me instant eyestrain, and most "cheap ones" (no idea about the exact characteristics) or really bright ones like the one used in shops or special events.
Monitors : Most (maybe all) the LED monitors I've tried give me eyestrain. I simply can't find one that I'm comfortable with. So like most people here, I'll tried to find older CCFL cheap ones on the internet.
I tried (and can't use) ASUS VN247H, BenQ GW2270.
Laptop : Most gaming laptops with TN panels give me eyestrain, and also the DELL XPS 13 9360 I bought (and sold because I couldn't use it).
Lights : LED lights and neon tubes, current car lights
Diseases : I have tinnitus (from noise trauma being 17), light myopia (-1) and astigmatism.
Edit : Noise trauma caused hyperacusis that led me to a TMJ disorder (griting my teeth when it becomes painful). I got treated for the hyperacusis.
Symptoms : Eyestrain, visual snow, floaters, dizziness, behaviour issues (sad, lack of energy). It takes some hours to get away even after just some minutes staring at an unusable light/screen.
Causes : really difficult to tell. PWM ? My laptop seems to flicker (camera test). Dithering ? My Sony Bravia has FRC. Other softwares issues ? I started feeling eyestrain when switching from W10 1803 to 1809. Blue light ? I use anti-blue light glasses but it doesn't seem to have too much effect
