Is anyone able to get into contact with @ensete ? Unfortunately seems like he has not logged in here in awhile.

So I did some research, and I guess HTC 10's have HORRIBLE battery issues. I could buy a brand new one for like $150-$200, or get one used locally for $100-$125, but the odds that it'll last a year under regular usage without major surgery to replace the battery are apparently slim?

Also, I missed the Black Friday deals, keen to know how @ryans is getting on with the G7...

ryans Are your eyes getting used to it?

Not really, I switchted back to my HTC 10. After one week of usage I get more pain in one eye, also in that time where I am not using the phone. So my eyes get more sensitive for strain/pain using the Pixel 2 XL.

Battery on HTC One phones have always been their biggest issue for me. I've had my HTC 10 for 2 years now and it's around 60% of its original capacity which equals around 3-3.5h screen on time on low brightness (which is good since bigger one may strain) as long as I use "battery saving" mode. Without battery saving turned on the phone is snappier, but also battery dies much faster (around 2-2.5h SOT for me) and phone gets hot occasionally, ie. not burning hot, but warmer than standard.

I would assume that a new device should last 5-6h with battery saver and 4-5 without it, so it's not a bad result I think. I'm considering buying a new HTC 10 myself within a year as the battery is the only thing I would replace in it, but it seems to be impossible in my country. Anyway - prices for new HTC 10 are currently pretty low (1/2 - 1/3 of standard flagship devices) and it's still a great device - screen is clear and vivid and it doesn't cause me strain, performance is great, it's pretty tough (it lasted several drops with minor scratches on metal) and has good audio if you like to listen on headphones.

Verizon had none in stock, it is being delivered in a few days. I am hoping this works, finding a new usable phone has been a nightmare. Btw, if this does work, the used ones go for pretty good prices on Swappa. Much better than Galaxy S9 or Pixel 3 used prices.

Verizon has a great holiday return policy: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/return-policy/, until Jan 15!

Just got the LG G7 and played with it for about an hour. I still feel some eye strain and mild dizziness, not nearly as bad as other phones I've seen. I have awhile until I am forced to return it (a bit under 2 months), so I will see if my eyes get used to it. There's no observable PWM. Similar to eyestrain I get under new LED lights. Obviously these LEDs are not dithering..

ryans Give it a little time, you also may have some anxiety in play which will go away. Try updating it to Pie. Try the sRGB mode in the display settings.

Sunspark Try updating it to Pie.

Hope no anti downgrade protection rears it's ugly head.

Yes I'll give it some time. Last night I used the device in bed when it's dark for about 30 mins. When I closed my eyes, I could see this flickering (as if someone was turning the lights on and off). Makes me think this might be neurological? This continued for a few minutes. Going to maybe try Skinomi Matte protector. I also turned on the blue light filter.

I don't think the G7 has Pie yet, it's running 8.0.0 right now.

Edit: I have a bad headache from this 🙁. I have found an interesting post though: https://forums.androidcentral.com/moto-g5s-g5s-plus/878377-moto-g5s-plus-causing-nausea-eye-strain-dizziness-what-could-causing.html and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-G5S-Moto-G5S-Plus/Display-of-Moto-G5s-Plus-causing-eye-strain-headache-and-nausea/td-p/3881750 and https://old.reddit.com/r/MotoG/comments/57ug8a/moto_g4_plus_eye_strain_headache/

degen "- Lensing/Glass effect: In some phones, such as the LG G4, Samsung S6 Edge, or Sony XPeria Z3, as well as the HTC Desire 612 and the iPhone 6... the screen is "lensed" in order to make it "pop". This lensing effect induces IMMEDIATE eyestrain for me regardless of settings, filters, etc."

@Gurm Any idea how to find out if this is also on the LG G7? I wonder if this is causing my eystrain. Wonder if a matte screen protector will help. Do you know of any more technical term for this to research?

I am talking to other people who have this problem. Most of them have told me they got used to their devices after a few weeks of eyestrain/headache.

          5 days later

CCitrine do you still use essential phone? Think I might wind up returning the LG g7. Giving me eyestrain still and causing these random muscle twitches after using!!

Does anyone have any theories why LG G7 and HTC 10 are intolerable but essential phone is? It's completely baffling.

I looked at their PWM results, and they all have different kinds of display flicker. Maybe that is a theory, but it could be anything. Including the mysterious Android eye strain that some ROMs have while others don't on the very same device.

The HTC 10 has flicker, too. You can see in Notebookcheck's review that the line is not flat:

Do we know that the Essential phone works? Or only with the Paranoid Android ROM?

Gurm Well, CCitrine reported it (Essential Phone) is usable, but Sunspark says it was not usable for him. Probably different issues affect them (their original posts linked in my tag). Did you ever get your functional vision checked (eye teaming, etc), Gurm ?

I don't think Sunspark tried the Paranoid Android ROM? I still don't know why Paranoid ROM is okay but nothing else is.

              • Gurm replied to this.

ryans If I had to guess? Whatever display/rendering layer Paranoid uses is better than the stock one. I know that the composition layer is what breaks Win10.

The Essential Phone is not in the list of supported devices: http://aospa.co/downloads
I think the only one talking about how Paranoid Android made a device usable in this thread was me, and the phone is the OnePlus 3. I believe the most likely theory so far is this ROM, like early manufacturer's ROMs, leaves the default color profile untouched, so no temporal dithering kicks in. I'm not claiming this would work for other devices.

Markus How much brightness do you tolerate on the HTC 10? On my old HTC one (m7), i could use it only on low brightness.
