Updated my A70 from May security patch level to October, I didn't really want to, but whatever, it was necessary because I do want to move to Android 10 when it is available next year. Samsung has made more than just security patch updates. The fingerprint reader was very bad, repeatedly missing reads, but now it is significantly improved. Supposedly they twiddled other things too like the camera software (which still sucks quite a lot and I would never recommend this device's camera function). What is interesting for me to observe is that I can tell that they fiddled with the panel's calibration as well. The difference is subtle, but what I am observing is that it doesn't tint quite as blue anymore and the blue shift on viewing angle tilt has been reduced a little. I am not sure how they did that. The white halos I was complaining around text on a white background has also been reduced a little. Text doesn't look quite as sharp anymore, which makes me think that they adjusted the anti-aliasing % or somehow reduced the contrast or maybe the mid-tone curve. It is not as contrasty anymore and text looks smoothed. What is curious about all this is that my eyes feel tighter looking at the screen when previously they felt ok other than feeling mildly annoyed by the halos and pwm. So now I am back in the "get used to a new device" phase again because these changes are significant enough for me to notice them. I am curious to see how long it will take to adapt again. Not currently recommending the A70 until I get used to it again (the camera and the huge physical size are additional negatives for me). Incidentally, the A70 is now coming to the US to Verizon and others.
