Usable Smartphones?

I bought the Nothing phone 1, and although it´s a nice screen i got an extreme headache / migrane after a short period of usage. It is worse than the s22 ultra and about the same as i get with the iphone 13 series.

For me a total no go and it´s now already on it´s way back to amazon. Unfortunatly because the phone feels snappy and has a nice look and feel.

Vividblu99 Thanks for the response! I did some searching and it looks like the x50 has more band compatibility than the 8. The x50 has 9/15 bands while the 8 has around 2 or 3/15 for 4G. So I may try the x50.

Keep in mind - the x50 5g is a bit of a bulky heavy phone so it's definitely not compact, but the performance is decent nonetheless.

Skylar1242 All fonts on smartphones (and every other computing device these days) are blurry due to the endemic use of antialiasing which seems to be the default everywhere now. The blurriness is less noticeable on higher resolution displays but it's still there and for me is intolerable: reading antialiased text for more than a few minutes gives me extreme eyestrain. I've disabled it on all my devices and no longer have any problems with eyestrain.

jpark28 How to do it depends on the OS. Fairly simple in Linux, a bit harder in Windows, seriously difficult in Android. Impossible to all intents and purposes on iPhones. Let me know which OS you want to try it on and I'll post a guide. Sorry for the delay in replying, by the way, I only just read your reply. I'm new to this forum and expected it send me an email notification when someone replied to one of my posts but it doesn't unless you specifically enable that.

On desktop OSes you can do this in settings via various methods. On phones, it can only be done within an app itself if it has a setting for it (very rare).

If you disable AA it is best to use an old font designed without the expectation of AA being present, that or a hidpi display.

what do you think about Moto G200 (very high PWM)? I'm now using Samsung A52 (180Hz) and it's painful for my eyes and head. I use this phone few months but it's over, I can't stand it anymore. I have used these phones in the past: Moto G3, Moto G5 and Moto G6 without any problems, so my hope is in Motorola IPS panel.

Hi, the moto g200 does indeed look good - no PWM at 100% and 50% according to notebookcheck. Have you tried setting the brightness to 100% on the A52 and then using an app like Twilight that allows you to reduce the brightness via software overlay? It might reduce your symptoms even if it doesn't eliminate them totally, and if you're lucky it might reduce them enough for you to build some tolerance over time, if you don't push it when there is strain.

Deepdeep Sadly A52 on max brightness is still 180Hz. I like to read books on my phone and ma previous Moto G6 was great for that, I could stare at the screen hours without issues. The A52 is great in many ways, but I can't read for more than 10 minutes on it 🙁

CorvusCorax Yes, unfortunately there is 180 Hz pwm at max too on the A52, but when you set it at max brightness the off period of the display's pwm is much shorter than the on period. This reduces, or can reduce, the impact of the flicker due to pwm on us, even if it doesn't eliminate it totally. The only way to really know if it makes a significant difference is to try it (if you haven't already). But going for something with no, or limited, pwm is I guess your best option.

My main phone is an LG G7 which has relatively high freq PWM (1174Hz) below something like 60% brightness so I use it at max with brightness-reduction using Twilight or Color Caliberator (which seems to have problems on android 12) and I can use it quite comfortably. I also have an LG G8x (OLED) which has 242 Hz PWM at max too that I can use "fairly comfortably" with Twilight, but this doesn't seem to work as well for me on the Galaxy Note 8 which remains uncomfortable.

ryans it's a pity LG stopped making phones, especially since they also had the best audio quality around.

Deepdeep I can tell you the DAC on the V20 was good in theory, but the drivers for it were atrocious so it had audio quality issues and random skipping with certain apps, which should not have been a problem. Different topic though.

JTL haven't noticed any problems on the G7 and G8x which both sound great … while we're on this different topic.

Proceed with caution in terms of believing the marketing hype behind the high PWM display frequency range (1920hz) currently promoted by Honor (& huawei) in their new range of amoled/oled devices.

From my own testing - it is all just hype and marketing, and doesn't translate into real world use.

I've been watching some recent reviews of their new Honor 70 - and in the majority of these reviews, you can clearly seen how bad the PWM is, and it does not look like the PWM is at 1920hz as claimed.

I know notebookcheck can generally be unreliable, but they also picked up on this when they tested the Honor 50 (which also claimed a PWM of 1920hz). From Notebookcheck's testing, they measured a frequency of 120.5Hz!! (Across all brightness settings!).

It really is just pure deceptive marketing at its finest.
