Vividblu99: Interesting! Sadly that it has a slower processor than Snapdragon S695 and only security updates to mid 2024. But if there is a good offer maybe i will try it. Has someone already tested it?

    RulerofNothing

You're right. The Helio G95 is a pretty old, dated and underpowered processor. No 5g, and the phone also only comes with a 60hz screen.

But it does come with 33w fast charging, good battery life and good sound/headphone jack.

I haven't tested it, but hearing that it's an OLED display that is apparently PWM free, I'm now interested to see how I'd resonate with it.

Vividblu99 Seems like they're investing in proper OLED's now, 2023 seems to be a bright year! Can't wait for more higher refresh rate offerings! First OLED without PMW flicker!

I've been able to use a LG G8X smart phone for over a year with minimal discomfort.

I picked up a Pixel 6a and whatever it's doing is so strong I was feeling almost dizzy and confused.

Both have PWM dimming. G8X has black streaking at lowest brightness setting as well.

I believe the Pixel 6a (QrapheneOS) is the worst display I own and the bests the M1 MBP14 in the ability to give me terrible headaches.

I have not yet been able to quantify why the Pixel 6a is so much worse. I've ordered HopooColor spectrum and flicker analyzer which may help and I have some microscopes.

I'm tempted to try the Xiaomi, but my current Motorola g100 started to produce severe eye strain last february, though it does not have PWM at the brightness level that I use it.

      Maybe temporal dithering?

I really don't know, frustrated that nobody seems to know, what is the source. I have just one device which I'm able to use without patching, that is the Lenovo x280, but even with that I get strain with Teams video.

I am writing this message front a Poco M5, which should have no pwm…it doesn't make a difference, it is causing headache /nausea/dizzy feeling.

More and more i'm convinced temporal dithering is a bigger issue than PWM. Most lights flicker as well but people don't seem to have an issue. I've tried many LCD phones without PWM and all give me headaches.

I've tried OnePlus 9 (pwm, but other users here have said it didn't bother them), Poco X4 GT, OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite, iPhone 11 and iPhone 8 Plus (iOS 16) in the past couple months and none of them resonate well with me. I'm still without a comfortable device to use.

        francerex

Yes. I'm currently using it as a daily driver.

I haven't noticed any PWM. Haven't had a proper chance to test it for temporal dithering yet.

I have a celicious anti glare matte screen protector applied (I prefer celicious ones as they are more thicker/anti glare more effective).

Honestly, I can't recommend the A77 5G. The screen is bright, but it's only 720p, and it only has a 90hz touch sample rate (along with a 90hz refresh rate). Operating the device feels quite sluggish, as the screen isn't responsive to the touch. Maybe I'm used to the other LCD displays that usually provide 180hz touch sample rates, and even 240hz (Realme 9 pro, Oneplus nord ce2 lite, Moto G62 5G etc).

Also the model I have is capped at 4GB ram (so this isn't very future proof).

I've noticed the on screen text is uncomfortable to read when the eye comfort is activated (full strength). However adjusting the color temp to "natural" and with a cooler hue, I'm finding it more comfortable.

The only major redeeming quality is the sound and call quality via headphones. Pretty loud and clear for a very budget device. Also the battery life is very good, especially during standby. Charges quite fast too.

I don't think it's worth the retail price. However if you can get it discounted (like I did), then could be a consideration, although you can also get a used/nearly new realme 9 pro, nord ce2 lite, nokia G60, Realme 8 5G, Poco M4 Pro 5g etc for the around the same price, and maybe even cheaper. All better specced and faster.

The A77 5G is basically the same handset as the Oneplus N300, Realme Narzo 50 5G, Realme 10s, Vivo Y77e etc - all just rebranded differently/region dependent. You may notice ram differentiations based on regions, but apart from that, they're all identical in looks/style/main specs.

But the 90hz touch sample rate/720p display is by far the worst aspect. Not sure what they're thinking, considering even their cheaper handets (Oppo A54 5g, A74 5g, Realme 8 5g etc etc) all have 1080p full HD displays, with 180hz touch sample rates.

720p displays/90hz touch sample rates are an embarrassment in 2022/2023.

        I think I prefer the Realme 9 pro & Realme 8 5g the most.

A decent balance of mid range specs/ok performance - and decent PWM/Temporal dithering free displays.

Not sure why I continue to buy and test other LCD based budget handsets. I'm eager to try the Poco M5s (amoled - apparently flicker free) & the new Realme 10 Pro 5G.

I think I may have developed an addiction of some sort!!! 🤣😂😩😩😩😩😩

OK, I think I might end up getting mentally hospitalized pretty soon, lol.

I just got my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 from the repair shop. It was an N920c model. Since the HDD had failed, the repair guy had to change the mainboard completely, and now it shows N920i in the device information.

And I can not believe it, but it is frying my eyes !!! 🙁(( The worst PWM I have felt in a while. I don't know if it was really this horrible before repair.

After experiencing this, I went to have my eyes checked for the 3rd time this year. I explained PWM to the doctor and had her do any examination there was, on my eyes, and yet again my eyes were absolutely perfect. She said there is absolutely nothing wrong with your eyes.

I'm just going crazy, I don't know what else to do. I can only use my mom's disgustingly old Galaxy Grand 2 now.

Here's a current video of the Note 5's flicker compared to my mom's Galaxy A80 and of course the flicker-free, temporal dithering-free Galaxy Grand 2. I think the A80 doesn't hurt my eyes, though I have never used for very long periods.

          https://youtu.be/jucGCKYC4vY

I wish I had recorded my Note 5 before, so I could compare the PWM, but it never really hurt my eyes, so I never bothered. Could it really be that once you see the flicker in video, your mind just keeps focusing on it more and more, and you cannot unsee it?? Could the N920i board be dithering? Honestly, at this point, I think I can tell dithering pain from PWM pain, and this is definitely PWM pain.

dawidd6 I tried an A23 too, thinking the LCD might work - no dice, eyestrain and headaches pretty quickly. Christmas gift for my daughter now.

I just received my ohsp-350f today. I've been looking at devices I have for blue light and flicker. Also have been checking light bulbs and Christmas lights. LG G8X which is my daily driver has <240hz flicker with massive depth of 80%. iPhone SE 2022 which seems to have no flicker. Will do some more testing on the rest of the devices I have.

Hello everyone, we are discussing the same topic on the 4pda.to forum, there have been a lot of people with the problem of intolerance to modern smartphone displays, and it doesn’t matter what display type IPS or Amoled, we came to the conclusion that manufacturers began to artificially (hardware or software) add saturation to screen colors using the same FRC or TD, which kills our sensitive eyes worse than any PWM, we have already tested the MI 12T PRO - it also causes headaches and eyestrain despite the rather high PWM frequency, my Mi 10T PRO cause a headache , although there is an IPS, we also had a version that eye-killing settings come with new firmware, which kills even good old smartphones.

In general, the problem is serious, although not yet very common, yet most people do not have problems with their eyes when using new phones.
