ShivaWind JTL hum, is there a new vbios? i could give it a go and see if it is corrected. one thing to note the --set "dither" is --set "dithing" on some cards. you can tell which it is the correct property name with xrandr --prop exept for kernel 14.15 in which the whole goddam property vanished.
hpst ShivaWind How do you turn off dithering in Linux? I use KDE Neon (ubuntu 16.04) and Solus Budgie on on X1 Carbon 2 and 3 with Intel integrated, but can use something else if it's required to shut it off. None of the results I have found searching work or are clear.
ryans I've noticed something strange. My work laptop which previously caused me eyestrain is becoming more comfortable while my home laptop is becoming increasingly uncomfortable.
JTL ryans I assume it's your eyes/visual system changing. Happened to me with cannabis medicine, now I can use my Macbook for hours 😃
KM JTL Do you need to maintain a certain input level of the drug, or does it permanently change the eye strain?
martin JTL Maybe Ive asked already, but could you share the exact name and dosage of the cannabis medicine? We do not have this option here yet, but I am curious in case other things Im doing now fail. You can write me an email on mjanas 555 {that at symbol} mailfromgoogle . com
JTL KM A bit of both. I haven't taken any in 9 days and I still feel great with screens, became a little weaker on day 7. This is after a year and a half roughly of taking it at least once every 4 days.
ShivaWind JTL why, for the love of satan, has the Dither property been removed from linux kernel > 3.13?
KM ShivaWind Are you sure you are not confusing the xrandr settings you mention with those of the open source driver "nouveau" for NVIDIA cards?
ShivaWind KM with my hardware it is possible to disable dithering for nvidia and amd using xrandr. the property is called "dither" on amdgpu and "dithering" on nouveau. since I use eink, I can tell instantly that it works. it stops the screen from swarming. there was one card gt730 with dithering on even when it was disabled. the xrandr properties have been removed from kernel > 3.13 with amdgpu its sudo xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --set "dither" "off" https://www.systutorials.com/linux-kernels/503406/drm-amd-display-expose-dither-setting-functionality-to-linux-linux-4-17/ with nouveau its sudo xrandr --output DVI-D-1 --set "dithering" "off" https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Dithering/
hpst martin I'd love to try too for physical pain and the eye thing...but have no options to live anywhere where its legal or easy to get...both the place I am now and my only option to move are too conservative and won't ever happen there. Plus the cost.
hpst ShivaWind Anyway to do this with intel integrated graphics? I already tried changing drivers in the rub config with no benefit.
JTL hpst Not that I'm aware of. I might have a suspicion of how to do it under Linux but it would require some programming (that I could do) and some test hardware I currently don't have in front of me.
hpst JTL What hardware? What would the end result be? A script? A setting change in a config file etc?
JTL hpst hpst What hardware A computer with Intel graphics to test with. hpst What would the end result be? A program to write certain values to the GPU registers that disables dithering.
hpst JTL I might be able to send you a laptop. But how would one apply the program? I am fairly incompetent at linux so would it run as an application you can toggle the dithering on and off etc?
