Temporal Dithering Testing

diop @ryans contacted the developer who gave some pointers. It was only released for AMD and Nvidia graphics.

I myself have been working on the same project since last year and I'd say I'm 75% of the way there for AMD graphics. I stopped in February to do some university stuff and I didn't take enough notes when working on it. I might start again soon and write up some notes for interested parties.

JTL I suspect for a lot of people here if we could have a bona fide dithering-free solution, even if only for Mac, would be welcome news.

Mojave and the new dark mode keeps teasing me 🙂.

JTL I didn't mean to imply greed was your motivation...I meant more like you need to do paid stuff first to live AND it's shitty to expect you to fund all the hardware etc as well.

A better solution to disable dithering on Windows and Linux should be possible too based on what I know. 🙂

JTL How long are we talking until you can dedicate time to this? What is a realistic time frame, with or without funding, to expect a linux solution IF there is a positive outcome (knowing it's not assured of course)?

JTL Do you have any favorite cards/devices yet? Do you know if any are capable of doing lossless screenshots? Maybe by restricting ourselves to screenshots instead of going for Full HD 60 FPS lossless video recording we wouldn't need expensive computers. Simple images should reveal the dithering. Though I don't know if taking them is possible without recording a stream.

It should be possible to do individual TIFF screenshots over a very short interval (under a second) and compare them.

JTL I would buy a capture card/device but it seems to drive it I would need a new and fast computer which otherwise I'd have no need for at all and which is too expensive. I hope there will be a cheaper solution.

KM Sorry to burst your bubble.

How about this. I make a fundraising proposal here to purchase a PCIe capture card, obtain the funds, obtain a unit from eBay and write some programs to do the video capture and image comparisons and test it on "known bad" hardware I already have (various laptops with Intel/AMD graphics, GTX 1070), etc. It's a start, and a great way to collect scientific data that's irrefutable.

hpst The image works for me. The right hand side (both upper and lower) blink for me, indicating that some kind of dithering is there.

arturpanteleev I wasn't able to get traction. Your best bet is to contact Apple Accessibility and hope they start to take us seriously. With Android, there's way too many variables.
