  • Laptops with OLED screens or high refresh frequency

Hi, I'm thinking of trying a laptop with an OLED screen (asus or maybe some other) or some gaming laptop with a high refresh rate.

I know that people often complain about OLED screens because it is even worse for the eyes. so I've actually never tried that one at all. But I thought that since the problem is different for everyone, it's worth a try. This is the only way to find out how it works in my case.

So I'm planning to buy one. (I have not yet found out if it will be possible to return it in case it does not fit. I plan to buy on German Amazon and I hope that laptops can be returned in their case. I expect that most likely the eyes will not be happy and I will need to do a return)

But before buying, I would still like to hear here the experience of those people who have already tried similar laptops.

And all the same is true for gaming laptops with a high screen refresh rate.

In any case, it's time for me to upgrade my laptop and I choose between such laptops. Another option is to wait for the release of the M3 MacBook.

perhaps you'd be better off looking for an old second hand oled phone instead to see if you like the technology?

Seagull I think that there can be a significant difference between different screens based on the same technology (as is the case with different IPS monitors) so in the end I still have to try a laptop

My experience with OLED and IPS screens are very different, so it's worth a shot, IMO. IPS gives me migraines (always and inevitably, but at different speeds depending on what OS it's running on - maybe 30-60 minutes with Windows 7, within 5 minutes on Windows 11). OLED does not give me migraines, but the underlying OS will give me eye strain if it's a modern OS. Windows 11 = severe. Android phone from a few years back = fairly mild. I had AMOLED devices many years back that didn't bother me at all, but I can't guarantee that they wouldn't bother me now, maybe my eyes/brain changed in the interim.

OLED is too expensive to have experimented with many different models, but I can say for sure that I have a very different reaction to them compared to IPS.

Having had success with OLED phones, I've just bought an ASUS OLED laptop to try. Will report back how it goes, though it always takes me a few weeks of pain before I adjust to OLEDs.

    I bought one of these.

Arrived today, and I am pleasantly surprised. For background, I can't use LCD IPS screens without getting a migraine, I can use OLED phones but it takes me a few weeks of eye pain and headaches before I adjust and can use them comfortably. Immediately the experience with the ASUS laptop was positive, it has given me a mild headache after 30-60mins of use setting it up, but that's a very good starting point compared to my initial experiences with other OLED devices. Its worth noting that the screen has an odd look about it, there is an rgb halo around white areas on screen which I believe is caused by the sub-pixel layout.

Seagull thank you. I'll have to try some too :-)

My main problems are eye symptoms, not headaches, but it's all so individual anyway.

so, I tried it anyway. bought an OLED laptop. ASUS VIVOBOOK OLED. It looks like a miracle didn't happen. symptoms intensified.

        anyone

Sorry it didn't work out for you buddy, might be worth persevering with it though, it took me 6months to adjust to my second OLED phone, 1 Month for my latest, but both were fine to use after.

Seagull small chances and I have only 28 days for return. I guess I'm gonna try MacBook next (if I have enough money for the model I need), or will simply get some IPS laptop (I need a new laptop anyway).

            anyone
i'm using a lenovo thinkpad t500 from 2010, bought it recently for 100usd. it has a ccfl backlight, hence uses dc dimming, no pwm, no LEDs . perfectly fine for my eyes. runs totally smooth on debian linux after upgrading the ram to 8gb and the harddrive to ssd. only video processing could need some more cpu power
