I've tested the technique on the Lenovo M11 tablet, running the original Lenovo Android 15. The settings were applied successfully without any errors, though I believe the device didn't support HDR to begin with. I got supportedHdrTypes=[], so it didn’t make a difference in terms of eye strain. That said, the technical part definitely works on this tablet too.
Keep in mind this only covers HDR-related settings, which aren't available on all tablets. There are other settings that caught my interest. Since I experienced quite a bit of tension and eye strain from the tablet overall, I couldn't clearly tell if these had any positive impact. Still, I wanted to share this in case someone else wants to experiment and see if they notice any improvement.
If you're seeing these settings on Lenovo’s custom Android, you might see different ones on your device. Even if HDR doesn't appear available, try disabling the HDR settings anyway. It will generate the hdrcheck.txt file as the original poster mentioned, and you'll see which options are available for your specific Android version and tablet.
Thanks to OP for uncovering this. These are the settings I tested (there are many more):
enable_adaptive_tone_improvements_1
enable_adaptive_tone_improvements_2
display_color_enhance
color_enhancement_mode
display_scene_detection
development_render_effects
