Reinhard62 You Moto G54 was on Android 15 before this update? I thought you were keeping it at Android 13?

I kept it on android 13 before I knew these instructions. (Because I thought there is less dithering in Android 13.)

But since the settings are only kept permanently in Android 14 and above (i.e. after a restart) I updated to Android 15, and then applied the instructions in post 1.

Everything is perfect now. No pwm, no dithering. Doesn't matter whether it's a webpage or video or whatsoever.

If you reset it to factory settings, I suppose the "no dithering settings" are gone. But why would you want to do that???

Intet The dithering this removes is noticeable even for office work, or mainly for video? Also in a worst case can one reset the phone to factory settings and remove all these configurations?

I think I figured it out. So after I apply these steps, can I factory reset the phone if need be to bring it back to manufacturer settings?

Also, aren't these dithering features used only for video? Do you really notice an improvement when viewing basic web pages?

Reinhard62 On my Moto I notice a clear increase in eye comfort when I turn on Bedtime Mode. This is monochrome / black and white mode. Does that indicate I am having some strain from dithering?

This is just because I want to know if for whatever reason I want to go back to default settings that I can do so through a simple Factory Reset.

Also, do you have any evidence there is more dithering in Android 14, or is that pure speculation based on anecdotal experience?

Reinhard62 how did you confirm no PWM? It is actually DC dimmed? That's so rare these days.

When I updated from Android 13 to 14 the dithering seemed to get worse.

Now, before asking another 100 questions, just apply the settings!!!

I assure you, it's impossible that it gets worse, it can only get better. Just DO it.

Can anyone here start recording their phones with a Carson Microflip using 240 fps or higher slow motion? It would be at least interesting to see whether dithering is actually changing in terms of temporal frames and if it engages on different colors from OS to OS.

There's not enough feedback from others vouching for the success of this. Works for you, Reinhard62, but not many others are saying it works for them.

Of course, the display will be much more eye friendly without the dithering.

And yes, a factory reset should revert the settings.

But this is the last thing I write in this respect.

Reinhard62 My Moto G doesn't even support HDR dithering. So the ADB fixes here would be for HLG and Dolby. Dolby is just for audio as I understand it. Therefore, I don't see how disabling only HLG would improve the comfort for most web pages and office work. For all we know any benefit you are experiencing is nothing more than placebo. If these commands work there should be dozens of positive anecdotes corroborating your success. You allege removing these four dithering variables improves comfort on your screen no matter what you are doing? It doesn't make much sense. Possibly removing HDR is a real benefit in your case, but as I say my display has no HDR. It says in the output when I run this: adb shell dumpsys display > hdrcheck.txt

Says "PreferredHdrOutputType=HDR_TYPE_INVALID" because HDR is not supported.

Likewise: supportedHdrTypes=[]

Maybe yours doesn't either support HDR?

I suppose so, yes. Just try it, it can't do any harm.

Settings remain permanent with Android 14 and above. Below they get lost with every restart.
