I'm sensitive to what seems like most(all?) modern OLED and also LCD screens (old LCD screens are completely fine with me). I recently rented a 2021 Ford Bronco for a 1.5 week trip out west. I brought tape and black construction paper to cover up both the center screen and the screen behind the steering wheel. Ended up not needing it and was fine for the 1.5 weeks I had the truck.

Just throwing it out there since I know all of us worry about this in various new cars. I was pleasantly surprised.

Just make sure you don't violate any laws by covering the screens or make sure you can remove the tape quickly if necessary. Should be easiest with black isolation tape.

I have driven alfa romeo stelvio 2020/2021, lexus UX (pre restyling) and Cupra Formentore. I never had migraine problems.

Last week I used a new model lexus NX and after 15 minutes I had a migraine. 🙁

Lauda89 Two updates:

Hyundai Tucson 2024 (restyle): perfect even with the 2 giant displays
Ford Focus 2023: I've been driving for two hours and my head is exploding. It's a company car that was given to me temporarily; next year I should get the Toyota C-HR. Let's hope it won't give me any problems 🙁

Small update: I tried covering the two Focus screens with two towels and after 1 hour of driving i am KO. I admit that I had not yet fully recovered from Monday however I got out of the car that my brain was exploding!
I am beginning to think it is the button lighting on the steering wheel and center tunnel. Or i am just crazy...

Lauda89 the button lights in cars have wild pwm. Also some cars have flashing ir sensors for certain features in the interior.

I finally covered both screens and all the button lights. But the problem didn't resolve itself it only slightly decreased.
So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the screens but something else. The windshield? EMF? Or my brain troll me..

Anyway on Wednesday I'm exchanging the Focus for a C-HR, hopefully I won't have any problems!

Honestly it can be the windshield. The polarization on new glass is crazy. I just traded my '22 WRX for a '24 WRX. Same model. Nothing different with the infotainment or the gauges. It took me WEEKS to get used to it, and I think it's the windows. I added some aftermarket ceramic tint, which may have exacerbated things, but I think the curvature of the windshield and the type of glass has a bigger impact than you might expect.

I'm leaning towards glass. I have a KIA Ceed SW GT-Line and after a year of use it's manageable, but there are days when I get a headache. Maybe a slightly different seat or light refraction, I don't know. Anyway, this is the first car where I've had such a problem.

simplex I honestly don't know. But if it's not the screens and interior lights that are giving me problems, what could it be? I've read several discussions online about windshields seeming to cause headaches so I'm assuming it's that. I don't seem to see well despite the glasses. It's like using the wrong glasses prescriptions.

Maybe you are sensitive to the flickering of light between trees, to reflections outside the car? That is, you should experience the same effect if you sit in a bus or taxi in the back/front.

Unless you have an OSD on the windshield, of course

I had one rental car that if there was even a TINY gap on the center screen that wasn't covered I was still getting symptoms.

simplex No it's not that for sure because with my Lexus CT200H I don't have any problem driving all day long and even with the motorcycle!

moonpie Maybe it was some sensor I hadn't seen. Today I returned the Ford Focus because I am getting the C-HR as my final car. In the next few days I will find out if I can drive it without a migraine! I will update you 😉

Last night I drove a friend of mine's 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio for a couple of hours and no problems.

I am beginning to think there is a strong psychological component. Like, if I get into a car that is not mine I am more relaxed because it is less important whether it gives me problems or not. Whereas if the car is mine I have anxiety about getting sick. I'm going to start seeing a psychologist!

EDIT: Anyway, I am trying to drive the car 30/60 minutes every day to see if I can adapt!

Lauda89 once you get to where you can drive it with the screens covered, uncover just the gauges. Once you're used to the gauges you can uncover the infotainment. This is how I had to do it with every car to date.

I'm currently shopping for a car (not loving the WRX), and Alfa Giulia is up there with Mercedes C Class in my finalist list.

I'm also debating a pre-owned BMW that has the last-gen screens, as their iDrive 7 screens were OK for me but the iDrive 8 is definitely NOT ok.

Gurm Certainly your plan to adapt to screens makes a lot of sense. Also because you lead to having a sense of confidence in yourself and in the car you are driving that everything will be fine.

I was in a bit of shock when on the Ford Focus I covered both screens and all the buttons on the dashboard. I was driving completely in the dark, and my symptoms had only reduced a little bit but they had not gone away.

I will try covering everything on the C-HR as well and see how it goes....

I'll leave you with my experience with the last few cars I've driven:

Cupra Formentor: I rented it 3 times and drove it for many km, with no problems.
Hyundai Tucson: 2024 light symptoms but I would say sufficiently ok.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio: I think it is 2019 my friend's car. No problems
Peugeot 2008 and 3008: no problems.
Ford Focus: disaster
C-HR 2024: disaster
Lexus UX: no problem
Lexus NX 2023: disaster
