I lost my safe IPS phone a couple of weeks ago and decided to take risks. I remembered trying out several Honor phones in a store months before and not feeling strained, at least in a brief exposure. So I ordered a Honor 400, which is mid price range but has more than mid specs.
It has a 120 hz 10-bit AMOLED display. On paper it sounds very unsafe. Yet, after weeks of daily usage I consider it my best phone experience EVER. There are a number of things to be done though to replicate my setup.
1.Disable HDR with these instructions: https://ledstrain.org/d/3423-success-in-disabling-temporal-dither-how-to
It worked on first try, no complications.
2.In Color mode and temperature setting select Normal (sRGB). The default Vivid setting boasts a "wider gamut" which I think works as FRC to achieve the 10-bit color scheme. We don't need that.
3.In Screen refresh rate select High. This makes it a constant 120 hz value. The default Dynamic option changes the refresh rate under different usage scenarios while we need a stable frequency.
4.Use Darker app (or similar dimming software) to make the screen always work on full brightness level but without damaging your eyes. This is to avoid/minimize the PWR.
That's it. You can use an eye patch initially to make the adjustments risk-free.
Despite the downgraded color settings and HDR the screen still looks fantastic. The phone was released in May 2025 which means it can stay modern for at least a couple of years.
