I don't come on here often enough but figured it has been about 6 months and I own two of these monitors and wanted to share my thoughts. I suffer most of the similar symptoms that people list on this forum. I can't tolerate CFL/LED light bulbs. Almost every single screen I have tried to use since 2008 gives me immediate eye pain/migraines. At the start of last year I started going on the blur busters site all the time and started disvovering all sorts of other different causes for eye pain from screens that I have never seen anywhere else on the Internet. https://www.blurbusters.com/blur-busters-law-amazing-journey-to-future-1000hz-displays-with-blurfree-sample-and-hold/ I discovered in my case the reason I was having luck with Plasma screens was because they have minimal motion blur. CRT well it has even less motion blur the visible flicker is no good for me anymore thanks to the wonderful impact LED has had on my life. I started seeing on Blur Busters a bunch of new monitors coming out with new panels in them and performing considerably better than monitors of the past even with view angles and speed and even with 60hz content. https://www.blurbusters.com/asus-and-nvidia-announce-360-hz-esports-displays-and-blur-busters-creates-custom-testufo-test/ Looks like now we are reaching the ability to run 360hz refresh rate monitors. Linus Tech Tips even did a video with 3 cheap 2019 144hz monitors and the LG24GL600F was mentioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76KPzzMccjM The monitor does have it's issues for being a cheap monitor and I don't know if I would recommend it now knowing what i know but for me personally it doesn't cause me issues. It seems that sceptre monitor Linus shows would perform better for reading text all day if you had a computer job. I can run this monitor with Ubuntu 14.04 and a nvidia 280 card(super old computer just for internet) Also I run another computer hooked up to another LG24GL600F monitor that runs Windows 10 1803 and a Radeon R7. I know for me personally dithering is not an issue as this monitor is 6bit + 2FRC. I find I perform perfectly when I run the overdrive setting on normal for computer use and when I use old gaming systems like SNES/NES/GENESIS I put the overdrive to fastest. When I play PS4/PS3 I put the overdrive back down to fast. Fastest does add alot of over shoot but old systems need that zero motion blur to perform properly. I use screens and game all day and have no issues. I would places my issues that I need to control to stay normal are

  1. flicker
  2. blue light ( I turn the brightness down to zero and gamma to the lowest no blue light filter as it does nothing on an LED monitor I don't wear blue blocking glasses with this monitor. Contrast I have set to around 65)
  3. motion blur
  4. screen brightness ( I need pretty dim screens no matter what the screen type)
  5. glare
  6. Proper room lighting ( I have 5 halogens and 2 incandescent lamps in my game room)

As long as I follow my rules I can game and switch between screens for hours on end with no issues. I do use lots of screens as my game room has 3 Plasma TV's and 2 of these gaming monitors and I use my Yotaphone 2 OLED screen. I am really interested in higher refresh rate monitors and hopefully by the end of the year or start of next year I will upgrade my computer and buy a better screen. Really interested in the LG OLED TV's 2019 model as CES 2020 OLED's didn't really have any noticable increase in quality. OLED is kind of at a bottle neck at the moment probably till they switch to full RGB will we notice an improvement. I'm also holding onto this phone for as long as it lasts because I want to get a 120hz OLED screen phone just at a good price. I think good things are coming to everyone soon as screens are getting better thanks to the Esports world. An Asus rep even said they are set on reaching the 1000hz rate for their screens which would be incredible for everyone on this site because motion blur was something we never battled in the Plasma/CRT era. There is a study done on the fact that people can see artifacts and have issues upto 1000hz. I hope this helps someone as I know this is the worst problem to have and how difficult it is to deal with. Have a good day everyone.

I am trying the Dell S2719DGF soon. 144 Hz TN like the LG but 29 cdm lowest luminance vs 89 cdm or something like that on the LG. Interested also in the Acer Nitro xf252q. This is a newer 240 Hz TN panel revision with a better response time, but the minimum luminance is also very high.

Second! just thinking this morning I needed to report back on this monitor as well. I came close to sending mine back as it was giving me headaches, but decided to keep it & i'm glad i did. It was hard to dial in as it can get super bright, but i keep it on the 'reader' preset with Radeon 580, Displayport, 144hz and reduced RGB. Gaming in 144 is a huge difference.

These reports on high Hz monitors are very helpful, I hope to try a few this year when I have a salary again.

reaganry Yeah I heard about that trick. Is that what you are referring to going into the RGB and lowering all three values? I haven't done that myself but heard it dims the monitor more. It seems a lot of people on this site have issues with LED brightness. As they are almost all double the brightness of any CRT.

Something must be wrong with white LED and white OLED in general. I hope purple LED bulbs and purple backlights are entering the end-user market soon. There's no other lighting technology in sight. It started with monitors but now that everyone keeps replacing incandescents with LED bulbs, for those of us who have that brightness issue (on top of pixel eye strain, flicker and motion issues!) displays might soon be the least of our problems.

KM I agree the lighting industry needs a kick in the butt. Almost nothing has changed in 15 years and they are still releasing the same CRI 80 crappy LED bulbs. I think in terms of monitors though we can thank Esports and people like Mark at Blur Busters for pushing these things to incredible levels. The new ViewSonic XG270 monitor has been tuned by Blur Busters and is supposed to reach levels of motion clarity that even the most famous CRT can't reach. Apparently a few monitor makers have paired up with Blur Busters and they can now receive firmware updates make them more accurate if they have the Blur Busters approval stamp on them. https://www.blurbusters.com/blur-busters-approved/

reaganry So by applying these settings the LG24GL600F became usable for long hours use? Also is it usable with the latest W10 update? I have postponed updating my monitor in the office (I am the only one!). The company i work pushes windows updates for security reasons (accountancy firm) so there is no way to avoid this. Actually my job's Dell Inspiron 15 was usable a couple of years ago but not anymore. I can only work if it is plugged in to an old LG 19" CCFL.

Peter it works for me all day long on win 10. [edit: i just did the latest win10 update and things do seem a little off now]
maybe first see if somebody in the office has a dell 2414H or Benq ew24 for you to try out. the dell is my top pick.

Peter I feel bad recommending anything as I believe everyone here processes screens in a different way. This screen works for me no matter what I have hooked up to it. The only requirement on computer use is I turn the over drive to normal. Originally when I first got the screen I used to think it was too bright but once I turned the over drive to normal for internet use and reading no issues. I have Ubuntu 14.04 and windows 10 each hooked up as I the two of these monitors. I also play ps4, PS3 and switch and a bunch of other systems and nothing causes strain for me.

jasonpicard I will give it a try, At work I mainly work with spreadsheets and ERPs.

reaganry I'm not at home at the moment. I believe it's labeled as response time. Look for off, Normal, Fast, Fastest. I put it on normal for web browsing and reading. PS3/PS4 I put it on fast. My FPGA SNES/Genesis,NES I put it on fastest.

jasonpicard i finally figured out how to turn response time to 'off' and black stabilizer to 0 & it's a big difference ! feels immediately relaxing -thanks. both were locked (Fast/50) in 'Reader' mode. so many new settings lol

reaganry Yeah I was confused at first as I thought when it was set to faster and I was reading stuff I would think the screen was too bright. When I switched the setting I have no issues and no longer think the screen is too bright. I think for me I have the black stabilizer at 65. Yeah I believe the overdrive settings are mostly for gaming. Its getting to the point where I think playing on this screen is better for my eyes then my plasma TV's. Movies though I think it's terrible but that is just my opinion. I'm too picky🙂

                10 days later

I got the LG24GL600F-B an hour ago. For now it seems quite comfortable but at the same time i feel a bit weird perhaps due to the size? Never had monitor more than 21 inches.
So the settings are: gamer 1 mode, response time to normal, black stabilizer to zero and refresh rate to 120hz which is the maximum in my laptop. I have hooked up the display to my work laptop Dell Inspiron 15. Any other settings? For example at what brightness level? I have it at 30% and it seems too bright.

Peter My suggestion would be to play with the black stabilizer as mine is set to 65. Each person probably is different with this. It's possible you could generate a different result having it hooked up to a laptop vs a tower. I believe when you hook up to a laptop you usually get signal degradation. If you are fine though that's good news! You can control the gamma which will reduce the back light. I have my brightness to zero I'm pretty sure. I lowered the gamma forget which way lowers the brightness but you can tell when you are adjusting it. If you still think it's too bright but hopefully not you can use the windows 10 night mode thing. I don't use that though as I'm pretty fine with it the way it's set. I wish you luck.

jasonpicard Thanks for the tips. For some reason i find instant relief when the black stabilizer is set to zero. I have also enabled the night mode in windows and the brightness is now fine. Will test for a few days to see how to it goes.

                    • diop replied to this.

Peter If you have any devices which give you immediate discomfort, try connecting them to the LG monitor and see if it makes a difference.

Is there a ELI5 for overdrive? Does it remove dithering effects or make it less noticable?
