ensete Me too, have you tried any more modern phones that don't give you eye strain? Google Pixel and Galaxy S8 both do!

Sfrix So Sounds like PWM is not your problem. Have you found a phone that works for you?

rich55 Interesting have you tried Galaxy S5? The S5 was fine for me, but the S7 hurts me eyes and gives my migraines!

Wrightpt1 Did you ever figure out what causes your issues? PWM does not seem to be an issue for me, but something in the S8 really affects me.

Kray Hi, HTC 10 also causes eye strain for me, same exact symptoms. Have you found a phone that works for you?

ryans I did figure it out mostly. It is the color temp diff btwn the room and screen that makes a difference, uniform lighting, and nothing really reflective within peripheral vision. These are things I have learned.

I have a diff problem than most here. I really don't get the headaches. I just can feel the presence of the screen in the form of little muscles giving me a fit around my eye. Especially the outer edges of my eye and where the hinge of my eyeglasses are. I'm getting there slowly, living without any issues. Just need to create a perfect environment in the room that have heavy screen use.

I used the s5, it was awesome. One of the best reading experiences. I think bc of the physical screen surface and that version of Android.

Lastly, I'm getting prk done. I wear glasses but just walking through a room with my glasses on that mixes sunlight with artificial light I get the same eye muscle issue as when using the screen. Seems my eyes are just sensitive to certain types of light and those lights are used in monitors. The edge of eye issue only happens with screens though. My monitor and s8.

Im also getting a kindle eReader. Give me time away from the s8.

Wrightpt1 Interesting, let us know how PRK works out for you. I hope it helps you. Do you still use the S5? I'm afraid apps will stop supporting the Android version or the hardware will fail in the phone and I'll be stuck with nothing 🙂

ryans def will. The S8 i feel like has dirty light coming from it. for me at least, it feels as if one can feel the photons hit around and onto their eye. my eye cant handle it. its like the system cant draw fast enough for the screen and my eye notices by feeling but not seeing. finally found a 120hz screen on a phone. want to see if the refresh rate makes a difference. i think its a Razzer. other than that, let you know about the prk.

But also just sitting in front of a screen. i find it hard to feel at home. but using a lense really helps. it makes it more like paper. but reflection from the lense and frame can be devilish. so i am slowly getting to a room setup that will allow me to finally get lost in what i am doing or in control of the system instead of at its mercy... hahaha

let me know what phone you get. do you think a 120hz refresh rate will help? Do you notice a difference with those monitors?

Wrightpt1 Not sure about the refresh rate, I'm not sure what the Galaxy S5's was, but it's probably the same as the S8's. The only screen that works well-enough for me is a laptop Lenovo T430s. It has PWM at anything but the brightest setting, but it's not too bright, so it doesn't bother me.

Wrightpt1 You mentioned awhile ago that cf.lumen seemed to help? Does it still help you? Have you tried the built in blue light filter from the settings?

ensete Have you found any more updates about this? I haven't been able to find a device that works for me that runs Android > 6

I have yet to find any device running Android above 5 that works, although I hear that some 6 OS'es have generic color profiles and might work. I might have to switch back to iPhone, sadly.

                ryans
hey. how long have you the htc 10 tested? It takes even with my htc one mini 2 some days till I get used to it?

I really need a solution for a new smartphone now.

                what about htc one m9?

Harrison I tried it for a few hours and it still bothered me. Should give it another go, i'm almost afraid to try in fear of another migraine.

ryans All the smartphones with very few exceptions(sharp, razr etc.) have a 60Hz refresh rate.

The refresh rate is not such a big deal because you use your smartphone mostly for static content.

The BIG problems is PWM which simulates lower brightness by switching the display of at relatively low frequency.

Almost all smartphones with OLED/AMOLED/POLED displays use PWM at about 240 Hz. That is low enough to cause BIG problems if you use it in a dark environment.

The only exception that I know of was LG Flex2 which didn't use PWM and had an POLED screen.

Wrightpt1 All Samsung Galaxy S versions use PWM at a low frequency of 240Hz.

If you didn't have problems reading from a Galaxy S5 in a dark environment than you are not sensitive to flicker.

Do you get computer vision syndrome? Sand in eye sensation?
