snksmxnzkz Ah. Was hoping to buy iphone 15 pro and RJ screen for it.

As i have RJ for regular 12. Its not usable for me for something like maps navigation, reading or youtube playing but after installed RJ i can use it for camera, sound recording and voice pitch monitoring (which requires me to stare at the screen a lot), but for some reasons staring at the app called Singscope doesnt hurt my eyes opposite to google maps in night mode (immediate pain)

My main phone is iphone 11 which doesnt hurt at all. But cant find another 11 which will be the same pain free for my eyes. Thats why trying to prepare myself to the moment 11 screen will die.

Cons Maybe on other iPhone models the situation with flicker will be different, I have not yet been able to find measurements of incell screen flicker for the 13th and 15th series of iPhones.

I don't exclude that the incell-screen manufacturing technology is different for each iPhone series, or the hardware of the device may affect it.

We have too little data because no one checks their screens and doesn't know about Temporal Dithering.

Besides, it would be worth writing to all factories that produce incell screens and ask them for more data about this situation.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Ignoring questionable certification such as TUV we've just barely established low frequency PWM with high modulation as harmful and have had product changes as a result.

Leachim38 It's not a theory, it's evidence based. our eyes hurt because of flicker, I pointed you to a way to test that flicker.

Sunspark A client of mine provides me the Samsung Zfold6 on Android 14. I don't use it every day, but when i do use it is usually for the whole day. My experience with it is that the internal screen is ok, however the external screen is hurting my eyes. I use the external screen e.g. when i take the tube and i cant use the phone with both hands. It is a bit tiring to open the device all the time and this is the main reason I haven't purchased it for personal use, given also the very high price.

Strangely the smaller fold Samsung is giving me eye strain straight in a few minutes of use. I tried it in a couple of stores.

I need to find another phone because my trusted A70 (still in Android 9) is malfunctioning (screen freezes very often).

Was using an iPhone 16 Pro Max for quite a while tonight helping with the setup, more tomorrow. It already had a cheap glass protector screen slapped on it. Bold font option turned on. Seemed fine.

Aquila No good for me. Got me bad headaches early. I assume temporal dither, but could not test it and returned it the next day.

My galaxy s22 is basically issue free. It's oled so has PWM but my understanding is that it doesn't dither. I think for me dithering is the main issue, so the s22 works for me.

There isn't one. Everyone jumps on the "dithering/flickering" explanation cause it sounds like it makes sense. IMHO it has pretty much zero to do with our condition

There is a probability that our problem is broken brains. That's why it is so unpredictable. Some patterns of light entering our eyes provoke impaired reflexes. So, nobody knows that patterns. And also, they are not the same for all of us.

If someone wants to try older iphones: my wife is using an iPhone SE 2 for a few years now, doesn't have issue with it, and I never had any issue with it either, including today using iOS 18.1.1.

(compared to my iPhone 12 Mini which is a pain to watch for more than a few minutes).

Limitless I'm switching to an iPhone SE 2020 (2nd gen) from my iphone 8. It seems to have an identical display. I tried an 11, but the display was newer, and the OS was updated all the way, so it wasn't good for me. If you can find an older 11 that somehow still has a good battery (or where the battery has been replaced but not the screen) you might have luck but right now the SE 2020 seems to be the best bet. It's the same generation as an 11, so it'll support iOS updates for quite some time.

I'd like to comment on the Fairphone 5 which I could test recently.

It is definetly different than many other phones, you can switch between 60 an 90Mhz refresh rate manually and you can manually (!) enable DC dimming.

The first day I used I coulduse it for 2-3 hours without issues but after a short while symptoms came back.
I haven't tested all possible combinations of display setting yet.

Unfortunately besides the sustainability thing it is not a very nice phone: Quite Slow, connection problems, camera ok, battery not.

But woth trying it

reaganry I certainly agree that an ad-hoc thread about the general concept of the usability of smartphones over almost a decade is not the most productive way to discuss and organize such information

JTL FWIW, I've found the posts from @Vividblu99 (and some others) to be very helpful. He generally lists the phones that he's tried and how well they've worked for him.

If we did start a new thread, maybe we could enforce a format something like:

iphone SE: gave me headaches within 30 seconds of using it.
iphone 15: usable for 10 minutes
...

This wouldn't be perfect. For instance, the same model doesn't always have identical hardware or software. And what works for one person might not work for another. But I think I would find it much more useful than the last year's worth of the current thread.

I managed to try the Oppo find X8 (not Pro) international version.

straight away gave me bad feeling, caused a bit of nausea, even worse than iphone 14 pro 🙁
