Here's my experience with LCD Apple devices and various iOS versions. Something seems to have happened with later versions of iOS 15 and iOS 16. The one thing I'll add to to what I wrote in the linked post is that I just updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 15.8.1 from 15.8.2. It's still not perfect like it once was but it did seem to improve from iOS 15.8.1. I have no what is changing since these just seem to be security updates at this point for iOS 15.

I'm still currently on a SE3 running iOS 16.1.1. I can look at that screen for an unlimited amount of time with no strain. I have not tried a SE3 with iOS 17 as I've been reluctant to update based on the comments I've seen here and on other forums.

jordan they started to use dithering with iOS 17. I looked with my microscope on it recently and it was awful.

madmozg but even in iOS 15 and 16 I also had issues. XR, 11, SE 2020 all extremely bad for me. I think I also had issues with the 8 plus before iOS 15 too. Is there a iOS version for 8 plus that does not show dithering at all do you know? I know apple uses dcip3 so I feel like it would always use some sort of dithering/frc tho..

jordan its possible, but I think with iOS 17 they changed the the entire algorithm for dithering and its very aggressive now.

So interestingly, I’m using my iPhone 8 with the latest version available for it which is 16.7.7, and it is fine. I feel like as indicated in that other thread SOMETHING changed a couple revisions back, but whatever it was I’m tolerating it pretty well. I wonder what that means for my tolerance level? Maybe it means I can live with any LCD device at 16.x, but maybe not. My son just got an SE3 and his old SE2 is sitting here. I can try it out for a few days and see what it looks like.

We talk a lot about pwm and dithering, but is it the only cause of all our suffering on iPhones?

I am thinking out loud so don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong:

I personally felt a real improvement when I removed the screen protector on my iPhone 12 Mini (thanks to my polarized sunglasses). No more nausea.

I also felt a real and huge improvement when trying StillColor on my MacBook Air M1 which clearly was causing me durable sickness. So dithering clearly is a bad thing and needs to be disabled. Once sick it becomes difficult to look at other screens, including the ones that are usually comfortable, but all screens are not bad, it's just that we are sick, and like being sick with food poisoning, avoiding all screens during 1-2 days (incl. phone & computer & TV) is highly recommended to get better again.

I also disabled font smoothing on my Macbook and I am so happy to read clear texts like it always were (and still is) on Windows! I always hated this smooth effect on Macs and didn't know we could turn it off. I feel it is easier to read, so I guess it must also be less energy consuming (at least for me and some other people).

I guess if we could apply all these tweaks to iPhones, lots of us would probably feel so much better.

Gurm ios 16 and 17 seem to have started applying temporal dithering across many iphones, the 11 and SE are not exceptions in my experience. I had to give up both, you can read more details in my older posts.

Having said that, you should try yourself, that’s the best way to know for sure. Try reading something on a white background at various brightness levels for at least 20 minutes, see if you feel uncomfortable.

I’ve been using the 11 since it came out I tried the se3 for 2 weeks it was ok here and there but one day it hurt my eyes so bad I that the last day i used it

Frito1224 So the 11 is ok for you? I think that's my next move, honestly. My 8 plus is getting olllllllllld.

Gurm yes it’s been great I’ve actually had 2 11’s with no eye issues

My iPhone 11 is fine but I've stayed on iOS 16.7.2 after reading all the dithering complaints with iOS 17.

            My background for reference:

I still cannot use any OLED phone or iPad with pro motion displays. So I don't own any other Apple devices.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the only OLED iPhone I bought and trialled this year. After a few hours of usage in the evening I received it, all felt OK and I was excited. But the next morning when I opened my blinds and the sun hit my eyes, my vision whites out and I get intense eye strain. My vision was heavily strained for two days and I had a throbbing migraine. I immediately returned this phone.

The new iPad Pro 13 with OLED made me have dry eyes and a wave of a motion sickness feeling come over my shoulders after just 5 minutes of use in store, the fastest negative reaction I've ever felt. It took several hours for my eyes to relax back to normal.

I'm still desperate to upgrade to newer hardware. I have the funds and desire to have the best phone, tablet and laptop but they all use display technology that ruins me. But even attempting lower specced products have issues. As a graphic designer, it's not just AI that's a threat to my job but also the fact I may not be able to use the computing tools I require to do my job!

Im really sorry for you and for me .. as i am in the same boat ..i abounded apple ..i was hesitating on iphone 11 ..and let's say i can tolerate it .. it's not a flagship and it's damn old what's next after that ? So i got used to android and i am using Motorola moto edge s30 ( g200 in global) with lineageOS21 android 14 ..has a snapdragon 888+ and 12gb of rams ..the screen i used like 7hours daily looking at it without issue ..the camera is meh and the sound is meh.. but using apps is fast

I would like a more modern phone ..now that technology is transationing to AI features and that will require special hardware like "NPU" ..

My is Microsoft surface laptop 5 .. i use it above 60% to avoid pwm .. battery runs fast ..and i would like a gamer laptop but i just can't find one .. we stuck and it will be even worst
