I have a Dell D3100 docking station running DisplayLink (May 2021 drivers) that my work laptop (HP ZBook 14” with Intel Iris) plugs into running Windows 10 22H2.

I can use this all day without issue. I can’t use the laptop screen by itself without my head buzzing/headaches/nausea that lasts a few days.

I have tried plugging other laptops with almost identical configuration and OS version into the docking station and get symptoms quickly.

I have tried plugging in my desktop with onboard graphics, Nvidia 1060GTX, and a USB DisplayLink device (May 2021 drivers) running Windows 1809 to 2H22 and no matter onboard, video card, or DisplayLink I get sick almost instantly.

I have tried the following (and probably more):

  • F.Lux
  • Ditherig
  • Iris/PWM
  • Eye Saver/PWM
  • Color Control
  • ICC Profile for my monitor
  • If using Nvidia, setting it to control colors
  • Calibrating
  • HZ changes from 60 to 240 (60 felt better)
  • sRGB Color Management settings
  • Adjusted scroll, mouse, and transparency settings
  • Dark and Light Mode
  • Night Light settings
  • Turning brightness up and down

All with the same result. I get sick almost instantly.

Why would I be fine on my work laptop with the docking station but not on 10 other laptops or desktops I have tried with the same monitor… inclusive of the DisplayLink?

Is there some other signaling somewhere I am missing? Is there any other setting to check?

whats your desktop CPU+MB, and laptop CPU+MB?

simplex Unsure of my laptops motherboard, but it’s a Intel i7 with Iris XE graphics. My desktop is as follows:

    Intel Pentium G3260 - Pentium Haswell Dual-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1150 Desktop Processor - BX80646G3260

ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 LGA 1150 Intel H81 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Cryptocurrency Mining Motherboard

Don't bother with this guy. He's not interested in helping you or anyone else, he just wants to know your hardware for reasons unknown 😃

        Dizzy LGA 1150

its very strange, I sold all lga1700 PC's due to eye-strain and stay in lga1151v2, I suppose older configs should be okay - my z390+gtx1060 are very safe compared to same MB and rtx20 (more intensive discomfort) or rtx30 series (insta discomfort)

this week I test 13700h + iris XE 96EU mini-PC with w10 21h2 19044.1889 and it seems also discomfort free

my last theory is how hardware render image, in particular - how it convert bit-depth. For example, when I connect to work PC using RDP at 32bit bit depth, it gives me eye-strain (not as rtx30 does but I can feel it), when I switch 32 to 24 bit - it become safe. I mean, if you open RDP windows at 32bit, it will strain you until you hide it on the taskbar.

Same eye-strain I got when launch PC with iGPU main output, and set rtx3080 to some powerful apps - and met same behavior - eye-strain until I hide app. After that I can say, issue not in windows interface, but how windows render or convert up bit apps to system

Dizzy So how can I change how they render?

I wish I could know… your docking station & laptop has ?compatible? hardware (in terms of bit-depth, for example) but your desktop forced to uprender image? I dont have anwers, but fyi, @jordan had 2 motherboards with same R9 7950X CPU, where ASUS X670E Crosshair (ATX) gives him insta eye-strain, and MSI B650I EDGE (ITX) was comfortable

            Dizzy

Different Windows builds have different ways of drawing the frames on your monitor. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT IT'S MICROSOFT SO… OH WELL…
