hpst Last month I gave I try to the latest one (HD) and returned it.

I'm in US, so I bought it from Amazon from SOL computers. This is the official US importer so we get support and 30 day free return.
The price is not 1K$ as on the China site, on Amazon it's ~1350 (extra 250% by SOL and 100$ sales tax).

  • As there is no back light, you can't use the monitor in the morning neither in the evening without having lights on in the room.
  • The drivers did not work good with OSX high sierra, you can install them but then whole Mac becames slwo. It works without driver tho!
  • Each time you hit enter for new URL or open/close browser tab the monitor disconnected. This might be MAC problem only tho.
  • It's not just inverted colors, many things became unreadable, for example you can't read what each tab says, they all just turn black.
  • The extra pay for the HD was useless for me, it was too tiny to read so I still pick lower resolution

Since I discovered my chromebook semi solution (socks proxy to mac) during the same period and I was running both of them side by side, I noticed that I ended up using the Dasung very little.

Overall I think it's very last resort thing. It won't fix all the problems as it comes with it's own set of problems.
If it costed up to 500$ I would buy it and use for terminal and sublime but not for browsing.

If I end up re-evaluation it I won't go again for the HD, I'll go for the Paperlike 3 one which is 200$ cheaper since it's the older model.

daniel_mate I'll go for the Paperlike 3 one which is 200$ cheaper

Guess you meant the Paperlike Pro here? Just for clarification.

The Paperlike 3 is actually the newest one, and the one I am interested in hearing about. The Pro is the oldest, the HD next, the 3 is the current one.

      deepflame

I think there are 2 versions. The old one is Paperlike Pro the new one is Paperlike 3 HD.

I tried last month the new, HD one. I think the main difference is that it supports HD resolution and it's faster. However non of those are relevant for me. I find the HD resolution too tiny. The typing speed was pretty good. The mouse pointer speed is bit lagging even after increasing pointer speed.
ah also forgot to mention that the screen is ghosting a lot, so if you open a web page, once you open a new one and start scrolling you have to manually press to clear the screen. It's problematic for browsing but was not much of a problem in terminal, since I kept the background white and all you do is entering short text commands.

I haven't seen the older version tho! My view of this device was more of a "medical device for disabled person", it did not feel like black and white external monitor. I think nobody without our problem would be able to tolerate this monitor. Since tiny resolution and speed did not mattered for me I think the older version would be OK, considering it's cheaper, but still too expensive.

daniel_mate Agree 100%. I have the Pro and I would seriously hesitate to recommend it to anyone. The only time I can stand to use it is when my eyes are so damaged literally no other screen will do. Which happens to be me right now.

@daniel_mate You must have missed my post above. There are 3 versions as I listed.

        Old to new:

        Paperlike Pro
        Paperlike HD
        Paperlike 3

Could you clarify if you tried the "HD" or the "3"?

daniel_mate Then I am very confused as it says "3rd generation" everywhere and I have seen 3 diffrent resolutions listed that lend to that. The older ones had a symmetrical bezel and the "3" has a fatter bottom bezel. I have also seen articles talking about 3 different models over time so don't understand the naming conventions.

          14 days later

I have a Yotaphone 2 and it's eink. I agree the tech is almost useless. It is only good if you aren't outside.

ryans I can't find anything but marketing speak on their site to see if this is just a rebranded Dasung or some new "E-paper" tech as they infer...but I suspect the former. It looks to me like it has the exact same bezel and button layout/markings as Dasung Paperlike Pro which is Dasung's last gen model. There are no tech specs listed to compare resolution etc.

They seem to be marketing it toward people who are light sensitive post concussion and acting like they "developed" some special technology that helps that, rather than actually selling what is just an existing E-ink monitor, something you can already get much, much cheaper. 2000 CAD to buy or 400 CAD a month to rent? Ridiculous. If it IS a Dasung rebranded, the equivalent Dasung model is half that price. They say "Patent Pending" but I can't see what they could be patenting other than their brand name perhaps.

I could however be entirely wrong and it's all some new tech and the similarities are coincidence. But if my suspicions are correct I REALLY hate this sort of "business" where people take an existing thing, mark the price up, and deceptively market it as unique. They add no value and just insert themselves for profit.

hpst If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

            It's probably a duck.

            I meant Dasung.

JTL If they have actually created a stand alone monitor like the Dasung then I wouldn't feel so critical, although I still wouldn't buy one at that price.

What really bothers me however is that their business APPEARS to be rebanding an existing product, marketing it to a vunlerable population as some special medical assist device, and making a hefty profit in the process. The 400cad per month rental fee is absolutely robbery imho. I guess there is always the chance they have done some amazing firmware work or something that is somehow relevant to head injuries and frequencies but there is certainly nothing on their site saying so...there is nothing but marketing speak and no technical info. In my view if you really care about post-concusion patients and the studies show E-Ink is better for them, then you will raise awareness about the Dasung instead of trying to take advantage of ignorance.

                Agreed

Going to try and find an email for them to set the record straight.

JTL I thought Canadians were all super nice and decent...this seems like the kind of shady business some wunderkind in Silicon Valley would do.

I may be being too hard on them and there is something we just don't know that validates their costs. But I'd be surprised. Happy to be wrong and apologise for the assumptions if that's the case.

hpst I see your point 😉

But they are from Ontario? I've met plenty of rude people from Ontario.

                    Agreed

JTL Yeah they look identical and that's what initially caught my eye. Same button placement/icons and everything. To add insult to injury IF it is a Dasung, it's the last gen Paperlike Pro model, and their price for that older tech is even higher than the latest Paperlike 3.

hpst I need to catch up with this thread, but have you considered posing your queries directly do DASUNG? I talked to them last April when I was thinking of purchasing one of their displays. My questions were mostly about the logistics of importing the product without paying 500 bucks of taxes, and little technical. They replied very promptly and they seemed to care about the customer. Being a small company trying to serve a niche market, they could be interested in hearing your/our doubts and reading thru this forum. I think there is a lot of material for someone who wants to develop a technology that does not strain eyes.
