  • owmyeyes is this display driver alone the reason that works for you? or both driver & this specific monitor in combinations?

as @machala mentioned above, have you tried different monitor using USB to HDMI with displaylink adaptor using same software driver in the settings? this is to rule out - this specific monitor

  • if display link driver is the true savior, how can we try the normal monitor with display link drivers? probably any other monitors with USB input can be tried? I am thinking instead of buying this discontinued product, how can we dry this driver with an existing monitor?

    • hey how do you connect this monitor with macbook? I am not able to find the driver needed for macos.

any display link driver would work or we need poly studio 21 specific drivers?

    • moonpie I will try changing the router and update the status in sometime.

      • macsforme My cellular network is 4G LTE and I have not yet upgraded to 5G networks.

This issue which I mentioned in the post is from broadband wifi router's 5G connection to Apple macbook pro or iphone 15 phone

      • ensete hey this is my work laptop - Macbook Pro M1 2021 model. I use extensively for coding and web browsing (Mostly texts and images and not videos).

My network is fiber broadband connection. Wifi Router is Tp-Link with wifi network of 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz. Router is configured to have 2 separate wifi ids. Speed from 2.4Ghz connection itself 40-50 Mbps more than enough for my work requriements. 5Ghz connection speed is in the range of 150-200 Mbps which thankfully I don't need it for the time being.

      • hey my symptom is not eyestrain or headache or pain in the eyes. Symptoms are neck and shoulder pain. Difficult to focus the screen.

Just rule out its in my mind related, I asked my wife to connect network discreetly then I tried to use the laptop. Whenever laptop is connected with 5G wifi network, I immediately got the symptoms. If laptop connected to 2.4G wifi network, everything normal. So this is definitely not my mind related.

Anyhow I am not going to scratch my head on this anymore. I will continue to use 2.4G wifi, avoid 5G altogether and carry on with my work and life.

If you are not having these issues, then you are good and blessed with good genes maybe. But don't undermine my sufferings. its real and not fake.

Just shared this post to know if I am alone or anybody else also have this issue.

      • moonpie hey any possibilities of high EMF from 5G wifi interfering with hardware components in monitor motherboards….etc.

I can clearly rule out the problem between the wi-fi networks.

      • simplex

I work mostly in day time between 9am to 6pm. Room light is natural sun light through windows.

For the night time, I use LED bulb -'Philips 9W B22 6500K LED Bulb'. its same for last 3 year.

Its totally strange how an 5G wifi is giving me this problem. I can clearly distinguish this.

Connect to 5G wifi - problem appears within a minute. Connect to 2.4Ghz connection - no issues.

        • @DisplaysShouldNotBeTVs Hey update! It was not recent MacOS update that was unexpectedly given me eye strain. It was my new 5G wi-fi router connection. I have moved back to previous 2.4Ghz Wifi connection and all my symtoms disappeared. I am continue to use my existing setup. M1 Macbook + Dell U2410 CCFL monitor + Blue light blocking AMBER glasses.

          I shared this in a new thread - https://ledstrain.org/d/3146-another-parameter-to-headaches-eye-strain-5g-networks

        • I am from India, suffering from LED strains for last 10 years. You can find various posts from me on this forum how I am managing these symptoms.

Symptoms - Neck pain, Shoulder pain, brain fog, difficult to focus the screen, elevated heart beats

For the last 1 year, I was able to manage the symptoms with Old ccfl monitor Dell u2410 with blue light blocking AMBER glasses with my Macbook M1 work laptop. This setup was savior for me.

Recently this good setup started giving me issues again. Troubles started with my phone (iphone 15) as well.

When I investigated what changes in recent times, I found out that I upgraded my Wifi and Mobile phones to 5G network. Realizing this, I reverted the network back to old 2G wifi router, surprisingly my symptoms disappeared, felt better with the old 2G router networks.

Summary - somehow 5G signals may interfere with your good setup and make it worse. Please post if you also encountering similar issues with 5G.

hey not all CCFLs are good. I found Dell U2410 was really good. Unfortunately with recent MacOs update, that is also giving me issues. Exploring what to do next.

            • one bad news! All of a sudden my good setup (M1 Macbook + CCFL Dell U2410 + Blue light blocking Amber glass) is giving me neck pain and eye strains. I was using this for last 12 months without any issues.

              What changed?

My work laptop Macbook Pro M1 recently updated to 15.2 (Sequoia). Ever since this update, I am facing this issue.

Previously it was macOS Sonoma. It was good and no issues with the setup - Dell u2410 + Amber glasses.

              What's next?

Play with different settings and find optimum one.

Update -> My issue got fixed now. It was due to 5Ghz new wifi connection. Moved back to 2.4Ghz wifi connection. My issues got resolved.

hey, I heard that CCFL lights emit more UV radiation than LEDs. Prolonged exposure to UV-A light causes wrinkles and other skin aging problems.

Do you have any idea about this?

CCFL monitor with blue light blocking glass is comfortable for me, however I am worried about UV exposure from the old monitor bulbs. I am using it for last 1 year and have not found any issues however wanted to be on the safer side.

              • Similar to you, CCFL + Blue light blocking glass is helping me 90%. My setup is Mac M1 pro + Dell U2410 + Cheap blue light blocking glass.

              • Hi @Puppy Just like you, I have also found comforts in old CCFL monitors.

I am feeling better with old Dell U2410 CCFL monitor and able to use them long hours.

However, I have some doubts about aged CCFL bulbs that they might emit UV lights in higher dose.

                Any thoughts on this?

Is it safe to use CCFL monitor considering they emit little UV radiations compared to latest LED backlights?

                • owmyeyes Hi, how is Poly 21 monitor for extended usage? Is it working good for you even with the bad setup? I am thinking to buy this to use with my Macbook M1. Any suggestions?

                • Hi @Firemaker , I have found some better setups or ideas so I'm not using the video capture card approach right now.

I tried the video capture card approach sometime back with my Apple M1 MacBook work laptop streaming into my good windows personal laptop setup through video capture card with OBS. I found that this reduced my symptoms and manage my work. Please note that it was not complete relief. I used very basic video capture card. I agree that screen was bad. It only support 30 fps so latency will be there. But my work involved only coding, web browsing , zoom calls. No video or display depending work. Initially I struggled to adjust to low latency. But after few hours, I have got used to it. So the latency was not a big problem for coding and browsing.

                  I'm from India. I used this $10 card.https://amzn.eu/d/j5aMsgD

My suggestion - use very basic card and check how you feel. Just check the eye strain part. Don't worry about the latency or screen quality.

If there are no eye strain, you should start using it and few hours of usage, you will start adapting to latency and screen quality issues. If you feel the strain at the beginning itself, try different OBS studio settings and check.

My experience is that don't spend too much money because any setup works initially might end up not working later because of some os updates. Every person is different. Setup works for a person might not work for others. So try different approaches for yourself but with minimum costs. Once you find a working setup, stick to it and don't modify anything on hardware, software level.

                • twomee can you please post screenshots of your better display settings? It will be helpful for me try it out
