Hello. I realy have been suffered from eyestrain from 2012. Different display, laptops, monitors - all of them were terrible for me, my eyes and my blood pressuare. I used to use my old ccfl monitor to not suffer from modern screen But a few months ago i could find a solution. I tried to use night shift in windows 10/11 but very important - i tried it on the max position You screen should become RED not yellow. If you make blue light filter intensivity max, you screen will be red(photo is attached). And you should not see any blue color(you will see green instead of blue) like this: It looks rediculus and strange, but it worked for me. I was absolutely happy, cause my work is about text and calls, and i do not worry about colors on my screen, after ten years suffering a was able to work on my laptop(i use hp probook 440g6)! But... 2 november 2022 I updated my Windows 11 version 21H2 to version 22H2 and my lifehack stop working. I did not want to believe, but after a few days a really understood that symptoms(hedache, eyesstrain e.t.c) came back. I rolled back to previous version(21H2) and eyesstrain has gone away... I cant explain what the fuck is goin on. Now i gonna to figure out, how can i block any updates on windows(maybe from registry or another way) and i download old ISO windows 10 and 11 versions from torrent(cause official microsoft site offer only last version). Also, i gonna write to microsoft support to ask, what they did in last updates with render, video or something else that can impact my eyes. I am not sure that propblem accurate with microsoft, maybe one of my laptop drivers were updated while i was updating window. But i think this is chance to figure out and specified my problem Also i gonna try night shift in linux and maybe on mac. P.S I know that night shift exist in third party software as flux, iris e.t.c but i did not try it. I want you to try night shift at old version(21h2 or older) of win10 and 11 and then at the last. Maybe it would be a solution for you if our problem has something in common.

f.Lux has a mode called "Himalayan Salt Lamp" that makes everything red. I wonder if that is comparable.

arturpanteleev If I had to guess, there is some kind of dithering flicker on the newer os version. Maybe you are very sensitive to blue light AND some kind of dithering flicker.

Interesting - using both Night Light on Max and f.Lux on "Himalayan Salt Lamp" makes it even more red than either.

I don't think they can answer that, because it is the only the developers who know what they did and as Windows is closed source it falls under trade secrets. Can't hurt to try though…

"how can i block any updates on windows" Other users in this forum do this with downloadable software. It comes with major security risks so think about mitigating those too.

arturpanteleev 2 november 2022 I updated my Windows 11 version 21H2 to version 22H2 and my lifehack stop working. Just a suggestion - it could be that when Windows has updated it has also updated your Display Adapter driver too and that is what is causing the discomfort. Head to Device Manager -> Display Adapters. Right click on your adapter, and update Driver. Select Browse My Computer and then Let Me Pick From a List. Choose the oldest driver in there and install it. This fixed my issue on 22H2, hope it works for you too.

There are numerous updates in every patch, and I've been working with MS Engineers to try and see what was changed in individual patches but it's not a process they seem really able to do.

It is not easy to completely block updates form MS. Even a the org level. Your company MSA between them and MS likely requires them to maintain a certain level of patch compliance

How do you roll back?

I recommend reverting to Windows 7. Windows 10 is built and designed to be constantly updating and oevr time MS will likely prevent any of the myriad work arounds stopping uopdates from working.

I encourage the f.lux suggestion, it feels a little different and has more customizability. You can take it down to 1900K.

You should look in your graphics driver settings panel to see if the slider controls for R G B are exposed independently. If they are, maybe that will help, and you can just set a colour temperature you like by lowering G and B.

ensete So if a DirectDraw/DirectWrite/DirectDiplsy update comes out, you can look at the same picture, same color, same everything, and have symptom where you never had any before. Because it s drawing the same thing, in a different way.

Please take into account that its not only windows related. Its windows + video driver related. If I for example use intel graphic adapter with windows 10 - I have no problems (except for usual problems of a man suffering from ever sore eyes). But If I use nvidia graphic adapter with windows 10 - oh man thats really painful! There is also one interesting thing. Using 2 adapters (intel (main) + nvidia (additional)) doesn't help at all.

Looks like nvidia adapter should be deinstalled and even nvidia driver should be deleted to save eyes)

The version has changed from 21H2 to 22H2 and the OS Build has changed from 19044.1889 to 19045.1889. Not sure what happened ultimately, but my eyes can sense the visual experience is different, and it hardly happens that the experience gets better upon updating. In fact I am struggling a bit now. Hopefully it is just a matter of time and my eyes get used to whatever has changed, but can you believe it? Updates were sneaked through although my organization had blocked them.

I am avoiding swearing.

I have been doing other exercises and found some benefit. However, W10 version 22H2 killed my eyes instantaneously. It took me two days to recover from 30 min use. Very frustrating.

By the way: i feel similar feelings when i used intel graphics in processors newer that 8 generation. I mean: I feel good on 8th intel generation with 21H2 but on 10th or 11th intelgeneration i feel straining even if i use comfort OS(win 7, 8, 10. 1121h2 etc). I think that it is kind of algorythm that could be in os or in hardware. If we can detect what is the difference between 21H2 and 22H2, maybe it would be a key to understanding.

And how does your deals with Linux and macOs? And tell me, how is your experience with Android| iOs?

AGI if you have personal Windows 10, i.e. not controlled by IT, it's easy - go to setup and recovery and there's an option right in there. If you have corporate Windows 10 you have to go to the old control panel, add/remove programs, select it and uninstall. It rebooted and was back to the way it used to be for me.

For OS changes that you know are coming and not a surprise, I think a drive backup beforehand is best. Macrium Reflect for Windows, or Clonezilla (from USB)--I have used both and both have free editions. This way, if something goes awry, you can restore without wondering too hard if the uninstall/rollback actually did restore everything exactly as it was. Of course, be mindful of what system you have, because some systems/platforms have started to deliver firmware updates through Windows Update which is a wildcard. I can't be bothered to update anymore. I took a look at 11 on my system a few months ago, it wasn't better than 10 so I took it off. 10, I have frozen for a long time now. I recognize at work you can't really do much about it on issued hardware. Sucks I know.

Before reading your replies, I uninstalled Windows 10 version 22H2 via Windows Update. Upon clicking on "Uninstall updates" (see red circle in the first image below), I was led to the Control Panel. I uninstalled, rebooted, and added a pause to the updates till Dec 26 on top of the settings managed by my organization (see second screenshot below).

I walked away and when I returned an hour later I found my laptop with all the apps closed. I checked and the version was again 22H2. An update was run on Nov 18 and one today (see arrows in the first image below). I uninstalled the update again and confirmed I am now on 21H2. What else can I do to block updates? This is a joke…

You might be limited in what you can do, because it's a managed device.

If you have a sufficiently high access you could use the group policy editor to turn it off, there is also an application that can do the same thing. But, exercise caution of course because if it's not your own device, you might attract attention from your I.T. staff (they can receive logs saying which device has what updates) and that could be a problem depending on where you are.
