As I only found my Xperia X compact totally comfortable in the past 5 years, I bought another one on AliExpress : it's completely unusable.
Here are a couple of pics : I used the exact same "white background" pic on Google. On the left, you can see mine, and the new one on the right. Same brightness, same RGB settings (0-0-0), same display settings.
The new one is silky, yellowish, and gives eyestrain in a few seconds. It's typically the problem I have with new screens, I feel like I can't focus well on them, and they seem naturally more yellowish. Could it be related to the technology used by such backlit LEDs ? I think so
I have the same problem with HTC U11, I tried 2 other ones, checked them with oscilloscope, identical response, identicat ROM and settings, both unusuable
SAH It most likely a knock off screen from China, i had the same problem with my Xperia XZ1's, bought two more as backups from Ebay, but they came with a knock off Chinese screens, i bought OEM replacement screens and installed it and both of the phones were usable just like the one i bought near launch. Buying new/refurbished previous generation phone on ebay/aliexpress now a days is almost guaranteed to come with a knock off screen since most of the listings marked as new are actually refurbished and the sellers in China even repackage the boxes.
Honor will launch a new X40 variant (X40 GT) in china...and looks like it will have an Lcd screen + SD 888.
Basically an X9 But with an better soc.
Hope it will launch globaly someday. Looks good.
Sorry bad english.
Jack Where did you buy the OEM replacement screens ? Is there an official spare parts website from Sony ?
I opened the new phone : chinese handwriting, half broken screws, missing screws. It's totally refurbished, even if they pretended it was new. I swapped the screens and at least I have a usable phone now, with better battery and everything that was broken before works now.
ryans Rataplan answered me this about Fairphone 4 when I asked if he used it : "A couple of days. I returned it as it wasn't as comfortable to the eyes as my Nokia 7.2." I tried it myself and it wasn't good (5/10 or 6/10 comfort level). Some were luckier in the forum
Pixel 7 is ordered. I'll report back with my findings. Pixels are usually usable with essentially no discomfort for me, but they do use pwm.
Hi,
A new potentially good phone for PWM sensitive (IPS, very high Hz):

ryans Sorry for the terribly slow reply. I'm really happy with my Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T Global. I always use it at 100% brightness, even though that technically shouldn't matter. There are a few new ones still for sale on eBay, but the phone was originally released almost two years ago, so it's kind of hard to find and definitely not cutting edge.
FWIW, I don't spend a lot of time on my phone. I just use it for the basics (send a quick email or text, driving directions, do a quick google search to prove that my brother-in-law is wrong, etc.).
I've been using Mint (since the phone isn't compatible with Verizon) and have been happy with the coverage.
If I were to buy a phone today, based on my experience with this phone and reading the comments on here, I would probably try out the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11T Pro, which was released in May 2022. But honestly I hope I don't have to buy a new phone anytime soon because I'm 95% happy with what I've got.
Hey. Glad to hear the Note 9t resonated with you!
Do you use a matte screen protector too?
I can confirm the Nokia G60 - Is PWM free!!
I'm currently using it as a daily driver - for work.
It's a decent display (with a matte anti glare screen protector applied), no eye strain at all - but the colors are really washed out and dull. Even more so than the realme 8 5g.
The in built blue light filter is also useless, and the screen has a constant bluish tint. But this can be resolved by using an external light filtering app.
The G60 feels a bit cheap and tacky in the hand, and low quality. The sound quality is REALLY really appalling too, and the battery life isn't great. Also, it only comes with 4GB ram, but I haven't noticed any stutters or slowdown or anything.
It's a decent device if you just want to surf/read and watch the occasional video etc - but it's not ideal for media consumption due to the poor sound/loudspeaker, and the battery life is a bit of a mixed bag (though switching the screen down from adapative 120hz refresh to 60hz helps improve it some what).
I guess the best thing about it is the PWM free screen, no temporal dithering, and the stock android experience. Very minimal bloatware apps.
The UI is quite nippy and fast, and the closest you can get to a pixel like experience.
But I don't think I'll continue using it for much longer due to the sub par sound and battery. The main thing it has going for it is the regular monthly updates, promised x3 OS upgrades and 3 year warranty.
I have a Mate10 Pro which uses AMOLED with 250hz PWM and its no problem for me, can us it for hours. But the Galaxy A52 with AMOLED and 250hz PWM is really straining. Dont know why.
hayder1983 same deal for me, my OnePlus 6T has an AMOLED screen with 240hz PWM and I have no issues with it. Every other AMOLED/OLED screen is unusable for me. I've been using the 6T for over 4 years lol
I have to add i have a problem with every of the very new Samsung devices. I didnt 10 years ago, but they do sth strange to the colors to make them "pop", on TVs and on phones. I am testing an Sony OLED tv tomorow, hoping it is good enough and eye friendly. It didnt hurt my eye when i looked at it in the store, so fingers crossed. If yes, then i will try the sony phone in a month from now.
And i will never sell a working "good" device after getting a now on from now on
hayder1983 have you tried an LG OLED tv?
Xiaomi 12T and 12T Pro measured at 1920hz PWM on DXOMark
jpark28 I tested an Samsung, LG and Sony OLED in the store. The store has like 10m high ceiling and is super bright. Every TV was at full brightness. Samsung was giving me the creeps, skipped it then. LG looked good, but Sony looked amazing. My eyes didnt revolt, so i thought i should buy one for my home.
I ordered one at amazon, so i could give it back, it is after all super expensive… I was really happy when it arrived, tried it and … I feel like throwing up watching it. I dont get eye sore, but i think my brain sees the 250hz dip in brightness AND/OR there is some aggressive dithering going on. You have one option to turn off dithering, but not sure wether it is the only dithering algorithm. And after all it is a TV, it has no backlight, but i cant make it more bright than other TVs. Sony uses an LG Panel, so not sure LG is that different. Sony is even more expensive… And i read LG uses super aggressive dithering on its OLEDs, perhaps it is even needed because they cannot show so many colors?
I read that there are 2 TVs from 2021 that are 100% flickerfree even at 0% brightness. LG QNED90(IPS Panel, expensive) and Sony X80K(IPS Panel, cheap). I think in a few weeks i will try the cheaper one. But my eyes need some rest, so i will try light bulbs, that is more important for me right now.
I dont think 1920 hz flicker is better than 100 hz. Halogenlamps are ok for me(100hz) but HUE lamps(1000hz) make my eyes twitch. Try this website below, it is listing a lot of phones, that are completly flickerfree(0 = flickerfree). Ignore all OLEDs and try an flickerfree IPS. Use google translate if needed or just ask me for translation
