For me personally it wasn't good. The display was a Quantum Dot IPS. Got the most bizarre and uncomfortable symptoms from it. And have also seen literally a ton of threads around the net about QD displays causing eye issues.

  • Hey guys. I made a post on this site back in August 2024 about the eye strain issues I had been suffering since building a new PC in February last year. I basically went through 3 monitors and still couldn't enjoy my PC. See full thread here - https://ledstrain.org/d/2928-eye-strain-for-months-after-pc-upgrade

As stated in the thread, I suffered a severe bout of vertigo while using an MSI Quatum Dot IPS monitor that really messed me up for a long time. Even now I am getting residual effects from it. I also felt extreme eye strain from an LG-27GP850 "Fast IPS" panel. No vertigo from that one, but just a searing, burning and very uncomfortable feeling while using it. I ended up switching back to my old TN BenQ XL2411P and it was at least better than those. Although I'd still lose focus often while gaming on it. I even switched to an older GPU (1660 Super) from a 3060ti, but no change.

So, during those months I had been considering buying a new TV. I had been interested in OLED for years but never went for it. On Black Friday in late November, I ended up pulling the trigger on an 55 inch LG OLED C4. After a week or so of just watching TV on it I decided to connect my rig up to it. I also bought a new RTX 4070 Super GPU for my PC. Almost instantly I noticed how much better it was. Even with the modern RTX GPU, looking at this screen was just so easy on my eyes. I don't know what it was, but my best guess would be the change in panel type. Other things that changed - I now use HDMI instead of DP, play at 4K instead of 1080p, and play on a glossy screen instead of matte.

One thing I would suggest to anyone out there - avoid absolutely any monitor or screen that has Quatum Dot technology or "Fast IPS" in the specs, because it might cause issues. In my months of troubleshooting and research I noticed that Reddit is full of eye strain threads about QD technology.

So i can finally say that I am free of eye strain while using my PC. It was a massive relief for me and OLED has not disappointed either. I understand that everyone is different but if people are suffering with IPS/VA etc then try an OLED, and if possible, an OLED Television, because I think there is something different about their panels/internals that is way easier on the eyes.

Sorry for the super long thread. Best wishes to anyone out there still struggling with strain, I've been through it and it's a nightmare, but I am sure there is a solution for everyone. Good luck!

Any idea when they added RT support? I'd consider going back to an older driver from before they added that in. And I'll look into that program tomorrow, appreciate the help man 👍

My monitor is 8bit colour. It's a BenQ XL2411P, same monitor i used on my old system that never gave me any eye strain at all for years.

It's that bad that I'm scared to even start messing with settings incase I somehow make things even worse…lol. I'm like paranoid over it all. I just wish I could use my system in peace again.

But thanks for all the advice and help I do really appreciate it and hope you can solve your issues too!

    • jordan

Yeah I've considered OLED and stuff but they're expensive and I don't want to go through any more hassle than I've already been through. I've returned three monitors already.

So can I still game on that studio driver? And also what colour control? Sorry I'm not the most computer literate person lol. Is it in the nvidia settings?

      • jordan

Yeah I'm actually concerned there's something wrong with me sometimes…it's like those IPS monitors I tested combined with the 3060ti really messed with my eyes and they haven't fully recovered yet.

And what do you mean by studio driver btw? I'd be interested in trying it if it's more comfortable.

I am using a 1660 super now, have been for 2 days. I think it feels somewhat better than the 3060ti but I need to test more to be sure.

I have long lasting symptoms from months of eye strain that are still present on some days (like dizziness and brain fog) so testing is a bit hit and miss. But I'm sure it feels better than the 3060ti at least. I don't know what's up with those modern cards…

          • simplex

Yeah I am keeping the residual effects of eye strain in mind. I have 14 days with this new GPU so i will test it extensively over the next week or so.

          • qb74

I'm pretty sure the panel is identical. It's a lot more tolerable than the IPS panels that i returned but it's still not perfect. I still don't think it has anything to do with the panel though.

I have bought a 1660 super GPU for testing over the next week or so. Hopefully the 3060ti may have been the cause of my issue. I have seen many complaints about it on other posts here.

          • qb74

But why would I be fine on the XL2411P for 4 years and now suddenly after I've upgraded my PC it's giving me issues? In-between that i did use the LG27GP850 and MSI MAG274QRF-QD and also tried an Acer XB271HU, all of them didn't help so now I'm back to my XL2411P.

The BenQ is better but still not tolerable for daily use really. I'm at a loss, I think the issue is system based rather than monitor but who really knows. Maybe I developed a condition during my extreme sessions of eye strain/vertigo on those bad monitors.

            • simplex

Will test for a few days like this. Not sure yet how I feel. Will take the rest of today off and go back to it tomorrow.

Will keep you updated. Thanks for the help 🙂

            • simplex

I have installed the driver now. Did it without DDU…is that a really big problem? Shall I do the whole process again?

              • simplex

Well I didn't use DDU but i did uninstall the driver already.

I have removed the battery for now. When I reboot i will download new driver for the 1660s and see how it goes.

How do I check this flag thing? I am bad at computers sorry …

                • simplex

Ok I removed the CMOS battery. Will wait 30 minutes and try to boot the system with 1660s inside.

I did try the 1660s in there already for 10 minutes or so, and i don't know if it felt any different 😐. Should I download latest nvidia drivers also?

                  • simplex

Well I have the 1660s in my hands now. Will begin to test it soon.

My monitor is old 1080p benq as well. But I am on windows 11…

I am praying that the 1660s will just be enough that I don't have to change anything else.

                    • simplex

I will try the 1660s and see how it goes.

So you had more comfort still in lga1700 with rtx 20gen than 30gen though? Also I know for sure my screen is not my problem as I used it previously for many years with no issues. It is definitely something in my PC. Just hope that changing my GPU will solve it.

                      • simplex

So you think there's a chance that just changing the GPU will solve my issue?

For me the issue is more neurological (dizziness, vertigo, brain fog) rather than actual pain.

Tomorrow I will buy a 1660 super to test it. I can return it within 14 days so I should good to test it out. If the problem still persists maybe I'll change my motherboard and stuff too…what a pain!

                        • simplex

My motherboard is a b760 chipset. And yeah my CPU is 12th gen and my current card is 3060ti.

Do you think it's worth trying a different graphics card or do you think the issue is more likely to be motherboard/cpu related?

                          • qb74

Thanks for the response and advice. Yes I believe I did experience some severe eye strain from the LG monitor which is why I returned it, then went for the MSI-MAG274QRF-QD which is an IPS quantum dot and that was pretty much just as bad as the LG. Both returned.

My original monitor on my old build (that gave me no eye strain for years) was the BenQ XL2411P. I am now using it again on my new build, and it is better than the LG and MSI but still i feel dizzy and unwell after using it. However I can focus on it better but it's still not sustainable long term.

So my question is this - could my issue arise from something hardware related within my system? Would it be a good idea to buy an older GPU? (I was thinking a 1660 super as I've heard they're good cards for eye issues) or can you recommend anything else?

I've seen all kinds of posts about how it can be caused by motherboards, OS, GPUs etc so i am pretty much at a loss of what to do, but common sense tells me the GPU is the most likely culprit.

The worst possible thing for me to consider is that my extreme bouts of vertigo on the MSI monitor have caused me long term eye damage. But I can still watch TV and use my phone mostly without any eye strain at all so it has to be something in my PC…

I'm just desperate to get this sorted so i can enjoy my system again. It has been getting me down for months and I'm honestly at a loss for what to do about it.

                            • I am suffering from a similar issue with my PC that I built in February. I've been through 3 monitors and still I get eye strain from it. I think it is undoubtedly something hardware related. No idea what, but I would guess the GPU? I'm not the most technically savvy person though and I've seen posts saying it could be MB, OS or other software related things.

I am so tired of it. It's killing my eyes and has caused me long term issues. The only way I feel better is if i stay off of the PC for a month. I can still watch TV for hours, use my phone all day without any issues. It is something in that PC I just have no idea what!

                            • New to this sub but thought I'd make a post looking for advice! I'm desperate for help with this it has ruined my life…

I upgraded my PC in February of this year from a pre-build that I bought back in 2020. The pre build was a i3-9100f CPU paired with a GTX1650 running on Win10. I used it daily for years (6+ hours) without issue. The monitor I used with it was a BenQ XL2411P (TN, 144Hz) and it was a flawless experience without any eye strain whatsoever.

I treated myself to an upgrade this year and built it myself. It is an i5-12400f paired with an ASUS RTX3060Ti. I also upgraded the monitor. I went from the BenQ to an LG27GP850, then to an MSI, both IPS fast panels that seemed to destroy my eyes. I returned them both and rebought my old BenQ XL2411P and still it hurts my eyes. It's a little better than the LG/MSI, but after i come off of the PC i feel dizzy for days. I am infact concerned I did long term damage with the previous MSI monitor as it gave me an extreme bout of vertigo which is also why I returned it. I am feeling dizziness on and off for months now.

Does anybody here have any idea what is causing this? Is it my GPU? Win 11? Can it even be motherboard related as I've seen some people say on other posts? I just want to be able to enjoy my PC again…

I would greatly appreciate any advice. I'm willing to test other GPUs, if there's anything anyone can recommend. I am tired of it and just want to use my PC again without issue. I have bags under my eyes from eye strain. It's destroying me and I don't know what to do.

Thanks for reading and i hope someone who has experienced similar can offer some advice.
