markdotpeters5 If displayspecifications.com is accurate, what you're seeing is expected. That's an 8 bit+FRC monitor that can accept 10 bit wide input. Betterdisplay+virtual slices off the lower 2 bits so you're going to see more banding.
Maxx do you have windows ACM turned on? ("Automatically manage color for apps" in advanced display settings) If so, turning it off should fix this.
The reason why some Windows 11 machines don't cause as much strain is that not every computer "supports" ACM. The ones that do — which is newer machines — will dither like crazy.

This "feature" was introduced in the Windows 11 2022 update and introduces Windows's own OS-level temporal dithering that runs on top of whatever your GPU already is doing.
This makes an absolutely huge difference for me on my M2 MacBook Air. (The visual difference on the Lagom test you linked to is readily visible.) Thank you so much for your hard work; I can't thank you enough.

For the record I’ve yet to try this on my Alder Lake iGPU as I’m still setting up my new PC but intend to do so ASAP. This is all off topic for this thread though so I’ll leave it there.
Try the CAT S62 Pro phone no dithering tested with 420FPS camera no PWM not measurable with Radex lupin on any brightness level.
I've tested this app for one day on my MBA M2 15 and can confirm that it works for me. Now I have zero eye strain. My eyes are so sensitive for PWM and Temporal Dithering so I can easily judge is there any on a display. I can assure you this app does its job related to dithering.
If you guys have M1-M3 mini-led Macbook pros, I am sure PWM is you problem.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Ive found the 14 to be unusable even in the store. its annoying Apple isn't letting 100% brightness be DC dimming with the newer phones.
I have been working with MS engineers over the past year. Sporadically, but ongoing
The issue isn't WHAT windows is displaying it is HOW it is displaying it. Usually in Windows 10 and later these changes are DirectX related.
So if a DirectDraw/DirectWrite/DirectDiplsy update comes out, you can look at the same picture, same color, same everything, and have symptom where you never had any before. Because it s drawing the same thing, in a different way.
To date we have not been able to find out what changes trigger our symptoms. We have narrowed things down to specific Updates that can make a Good display a Bad display, but there are zillions of changes in every update.
Have you tried patching?

They are two totally different panels though! The iphone X has a fixed PWM at 240hz and a less bright screen with a fixed frequency at 60 hz. This one has 2000nits of maximum brightness, a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 hz, and a PWM that looks dynamic.
Then consider that there is also different software, ios 14 vs. 16!
